I was out running yesterday and I was watching some guys practice their baseball fielding. They had gloves on but they couldn't catch anything.

It got me thinking... I never knew anything about baseball til I came to Korea, but I watch it a fair bit on TV now. It seems to me like baseball gloves are kind of counterproductive. The guys in the park were dropping balls that I could have easily caught with my bare hands. I also see it on TV all the time, especially when they're trying to catch a ball on the right side of their body.

How hard can it be to catch a ball that you need a bucket in your hand? I can understand it for the guys behind the batter cos they're dealing with really fast balls, but for outfielders it just seems like it's a cheat. I'm no fan of cricket but those guys rarely drop balls and they don't wear gloves. The guys I've been watching play baseball wear these huge gloves and they still can't catch shit.

Why is there an obsession in American sports for unnecessary equipment? Think of the ridiculous padding that American footballers wear. I respect basketball so much more cos they don't need all that stuff, just a ball and a basket.

You hit the nail on the head there, American sports!

Agree about basketball though.

Rugby is much better and with minimal padding as opposed to American footballers who look like fridges with tights. Dont' tell me crap about American footballers taking bigger hits than rugby players. Getting hurt seems to be part and parcel of rugby.

Baseball must be one of the most tedious sports about. All-on-one sports are crap. Why congratulate a guy for not hitting the ball and then he gets to jog to first base, where he is high fived by a trainer. Shit sport!

I actually kind of like baseball now. It's a lot better than cricket for sure. I was just asking if there really is a need for the gloves. Has anyone ever tried playing without one? I was watching CNN and some guy caught the ball with his bare right hand and they gave him the Play of the Day. Give me a break...
