| My contract (GEPIK) allows for the school to require me to teach "up to 20 hours a week" during the vacation periods. They cannot require me to teach during my actual vacation days, but they seem quite keen in taking full advantage of this clause. That is, they plan to have me teach beyond the typical 40 classes. Are there any others who have had this experience? |

My school have always had me do the usual 40 classes (4 a day for 10 days) during vacations. I do know a guy who was an elementary school teacher with Gepik last year, and he was scheduled for the usual 40 classes, when (just as the 10 days was coming to an end) his school noticed that it never mentioned just 10 days. As they couldn't figure out a way to abuse him any further at such short notice, they called the local orphanage and offered the kids there some free englishee!
He left the school after his year was up! |

That should be 40 classes split evenly over two weeks. Well, this is how I have typically seen it done. |

Ahhh, now I get what you are talking about. These long gaps between classes reading Dave's is starting to rot my brain.

| That sucks. I get 30,000 to 45,000 per class during school vacation. Not GEPIK, though, it's EPIK. I'd use up 15 sick days if they wanted me to work for free. Ever see the P.E. teacher doing free soccer classes every day during vacation? |

I'm working through EPIK with a Private School and getting no $ for working the summer vacations. |

I don't get any extra money for vacation or "camp" classes through GEPIK. How do you manage that, marlow?
Luckily I have a lighter schedule than a lot of GEPIK teachers I know. |

| Are there any public school teachers that have to teach next week while the rest of the school is on vacation? I hope there isn't a school that planned a special camp just for this occasion. |

I work GEPIK elementary and we only have Monday off. I didn't realize that they can only make you teach for 20 hours for 10 days during vacations.
I am also one of the teachers who doesn't get paid overtime for holiday teaching. Has anyone negotiated overtime pay during vacations for their second contract? That would make working in a freezing classroom all alone a lot more endurable. |

It was managed for me. There is a certain city under EPIK that offers this. At least I think they still do. Maybe I'm the last of the Mohicans within my city.
Anyway, if you have a good relationship with your school, you should be able to politely refuse classes that are opened to the students for free, as they will not take the class seriously. And, if the students pay, why shouldn't you get the money? |

| Where are people getting this ten days bit from? My contract was a flat 20 hours a week during vacation, meaning that this winter I taught something like 21 days. |

I put up with this crap because it is stated in my contract and I have a family to support. I have an F5, but my regular conditions are so good I don't mind working a few weeks during winter vacations (after a while you can recycle camp lesson plans and it is kinda fun). I don't get paid extra except for overnight stays. I like the camps because it is one of the few times my colleagues get together, put in a team effort and have a few dozen beers on the POE. Sometimes these are the only opportunities fpr students to interact with a foreigner outside of the school environment. |
