I am hoping to teach in Korea next year (September), but cant leave until mid-august. I am applying to SMOE and am currently looking at my options with worknplay. I would like a public school job in gangam (kangam?), mokdong, or somewhere near (enough) to central Seoul.
Although a public school job is ideal (I dont want to become another angry hagwon teacher), I would love to have an afternoon position (the 2-10, 1-9, or even 3-11 shift), which I understand means working in the private sector.
Does anyone have suggestions for recruiters? Locations I should be considering? Anyone know of any specific positions that fit all this?
Thanks! |

SMOE lists their recruiters on their ETIS website. Only use one to apply for SMOE, but use multiple recruiters if you are looking for hogwan jobs.
SMOE and Gangnam schools are run by different organizations. SMOE will place you in Seoul, but not in the Gangnam section. |

2 of the best school recruiters for the government schools are Korvia & WorkNPlay. Korvia was started by several former employees of WNP and imo are a bit more friendly and willing to work with you.
I used WNP for 2 years and got good schools but I am now going thru Korvia. However, my recruiter told me she doesn't deal with SMOE anymore (only EPIK and GEPIK).
Korvia is located in Kangnam too I believe. |

Forgive me if this has been answered elsewhere, I can't seem to find it.
I just sent my application in to Korvia. After some further research, I find they aren't working with SMOE this year. I suppose that looking at their website advertising public school positions, I assumed they were working with SMOE. My mistake, but I'm not too concerned with it.
HOWEVER, say I still wanted to apply to SMOE. I register with worknplay or footprints and send them the SMOE application, letter of rec. and the rest. Would my involvement with Korvia come back to bite me in the ass? Even though I'm only applying to SMOE through one recruiter, not two? I'm already close enough to the May 31 deadline, am I going to have to go through some crazy bureaucracy, negating my application to Korvia, just to get my application in to SMOE?
Thanks! |

OP- Stay away from "private schools" (aka hagwon or hakwan). If you have a genuine diploma, don't take a chance on ending up in a hellish situation. |

If Korvia has nothing to do with SMOE then you don't have anything to worry about. Needless to say, the SMOE recruiters will try and get you into a hagwon job. A SMOE recruiting company tried to get me to do Hagwon until I told them I want SMOE and nothing else.
Me: I want to work in Seoul with SMOE.
SMOE recuriting company : We got a great hagwon position in Incheon.
Me: I said I wanted to work with SMOE.
Recruiting company : But Incheon is a great area and we can set you up with a hagwon right away.
Me: I don't want a hagwon, I want SMOE.
Recruiting company: Ok, I'll transfer you to the person in charge of public school recruiting.
The funny thing is, when I applied through the recruiter, my application AND my resume specifically stated I wanted to work public school with SMOE. |
