Hi all,

I have been offered two positions in private schools with relatively the same perks (Jeju 100,000 less a month, less hours; Geoje 100,000 more a month, more hours).

What I am wondering, which place is better for living? Is one better for foreigners, night life, outdoor activities etc...?

I plan on traveling while over there to other countries, is it easier/cheaper to get in/out of the country living on Geoje rather than Jeju?

Is one cheaper than the other for the cost of living?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I don't know much about Geoje, but Jeju is a cozy place to live. I took a paycut (100k less than my first year, 200k less than what I would have made in Gyeonggi).

Jeju is small and has a nice urban nightlife (take this with a grain, I'm known for my homebody lifestyle) but also has hella hiking, mountains, natural beauty. Live in the city (Jeju city, Shin Jeju, or maybe Seogwipo (?)) and you can't go wrong.

Lived in Geoje, but wouldn't live in either personally.

Geoje has a lot of foreigners and is easier to travel to other parts in Korea. I think the bridge to Busan is complete so it would easy enough to get some city life in 40-50mins.

With Jeju you're limited to ferries and planes. I think you'll have more luck of direct flights to other countries from Gimhae ( the closest airport to Geoje) than from Jeju.

If you're completely new to Korea, Geoje is easier to settle in I think.

A bus from Geoje to Busan costs less than 7,000won. Some of them stop in Gimhae airport along the way so getting to other countries is no problem in that regard. Buses go every half hour or more frequently in some cases. Takes an hour or less to get to Busan.

Buses to seoul cost about 30,000 and also go every half hour or more frequently. The bus takes about 4 hours.

Geoje has a lot of foreigners, both engineers and teachers. The engineers had tended to be older but more recently have started to be in their 20s and 30s. The teachers and engineers are mising much more both at night time and during the day with playing soccer and frisbee.

There are about 6-7 foreign marts in Geoje too, plus the homeplus is selling quite a few more western items than it used to even 2 years ago.

Then you have countless amounts of mountains, beaches etc to enjoy yourself with. The southern part of the island is the nicest, it's very very scenic and it's awesome to drive around and relax in. The more northern parts of Gohyeon and Okpo are the bigger town / cities on the island. Although both have mountains to hike, your view is mostly looking out over a shipyard or a town. There's loads of stuff to do on the island.

Can't give you much information about Jeju. I only spent 5 days or so there and you would need to know the community to enjoy the place fully so I won't give an opinion on it.

Thanks for all that info everyone!!

I also have an offer for a public school position in Chungnam region...which I hear is pretty rural. I was initially going to do that, but then the education board lowered pay for elementary from 2.3 to 2.1 with no rural allowance, and upped teaching from 22 classes to 25 classes...so not sure what to do at this point??

So I guess its Chungnam vs. Geoje vs. Jeju

So its public (18 vacations days) vs. private (with 10 vacation days)

advice???
