Hi,

I tried looking for this question as opposed to writing a new post, but I either couldn't find it, or it doesn't exist.

My question, my contract finishes on May 9th but I'm looking to stay in Korea for about a month, max 5 weeks....to travel, see friends, etc. I do not plan on working in that time, but I have been told by my school that once they sign the contract completion papers, I must leave the country within 10 days.

I am Canadian, and the agreement between Korea and Canada states that a Canadian citizen is able to stay in Korea for 6 months without a visa.

Does anyone know if my school is telling the truth, or are they trying to mess with me and my pension (which they have said takes a month to process)

Any information would be very much appreciated!!!

You may stay by extending your visa at the immigration office.

CAVEAT: IF you are at a public school they may not pay for your return airfare if you remain in Korea for more than 10 days after your contract ends. IF you leave and return you have met the obligation to leave and they are required to pay you for your ticket.

You CAN get an extension for up to 30 days beyond the final date on your ARC by visiting the local immigration office with your passport, ARC and exit ticket.

You CAN get a 6 month stay (B2 tourist stamp) by simply catching the morning ferry to Japan and returning the same afternoon. (any trip out of the country and back will suffice).

You CANNOT simply overstay beyond the expiry date indicated on your ARC or you WILL be detained, questioned and FINED when you do try to depart.

BIG NOTE HERE:

The important date is the expiry date on your ARC and NOT your contract completion date.
