Last evening I was returning to my apartment complex in a taxi. As the driver pulled into the very steep driveway of the complex he honked at a Korean man crossing the driveway on foot. Frankly, I don't know why he honked at the guy...pedestrians who can teleport themselves out of the way are pretty few and far between.

So the honkee takes exception and comes over to berate the honker. Pretty soon the screaming verbal fight escalates into the driver jumping out of the taxi (still on the steep driveway) and he and the honkee get all chesty with each other.

As I am exiting the back seat of the taxi, the chestiness turns into a scuffle, with both men on the ground. A small group of onlookers gathers, and then the vacant taxi starts to jerkily go backwards down the steep driveway. Onlookers scream a warning to the driver, who leaps up and jumps in his taxi. He then points it at the other man and acts as if he's going to run him over, although he stopped before he hit him.

At this point, I ran into the building. Saved 1800 won...

EF THAT! For those few minutes he works for me, and if he's going to be that unprofessional then he doesn't get my money. I wouldn't care if it was 20,000 won, if he's fighting some poor guy who was just crossing the street I would bail too.

I find that hard to believe since a lot of people find that putting trash in NO trash can is ok.

But seriously, Seoul needs a lot more trash cans period. I guess that's better to discuss in another thread though

I've been told that there was a big problem with people dumping their home trash in the public trash cans, so the government decided that removing the trash cans would alleviate (sp?) the problem.

Well, it fixes THAT problem. There's still the problem of trash blanketing the sidewalks and parks, though. Picnic tables in my area are disgusting! Old Ramen bowls, etc.

I would have paid him...but I was a bit reluctant to put myself in the way of a driver who has exhibited this lack of self-control and is now aiming his car at the other guy...get real.

I've been in this situation before, too. Fortunately we hadn't gone very far (tho there was still 1900 on the meter). I just got out, walked a little bit and hailed the next taxi.

Well, you'll be happy to know that my wife heard on the news that Korea is going to start putting out some more garbage cans. Finally, after 5 years, they've started listening to all of the complaints. Must have had something to do with LMB.

you should have paid him. The steep upgrade was obviously a hassle and he could have left you at the bottom. Now he'll remember you bailing to every whitey that tries to flag him down next time. That's bad taxi karma.

1. The OP needed to get to a certain address. A hill is not a "hassle," it's a street. The OP was in a car, not a rickshaw. If a driver doesn't take me where I want to go, I don't pay him, he didn't finish the job. Should the OP flag another taxi and pay more to finish the job?

2. If the taxi driver would've asked for the money at the destination, then would've fought an innocent man, the OP should have paid. The driver did not reach the destination and used the client's time for his own agenda (fighting an innocent man).

For the people that don't follow this logic. Would you pay a taxi driver that tried to sexually harass you and in your desire to get away from them tell them to pull over? Would you pay a taxi driver that runs into someone and you never get to your destination?

The fee is on a running meter. When you have reached your destination or have chosen to change your destination and finish your business with someone that is doing their job, you pay them. If you get into a taxi with a guy that smokes and you saw that going in but hate the smell, too bad. pay them. If the taxi wasn't well kept, as long as you don't get tetanus from sitting down, sucks, but pay them. If you weren't made an accessory to a crime or other violation (other than speeding, running reds etc, you know the common practices of any driver in Korea) and you made it to where you wanted to go, pay the driver.

It probably had to do with complaints from McDonald's, KFC, and GS25. Unless you find a subway station along the way, those are the only places to dispose of your juice bottle, candy wrapper, or whatever. The GS25 cans are always so small, it wouldn't take much trash to overflow one.
