|
|
A friend of mine is going to be teaching at a public school in Busan starting mid June. One of the reasons public schools seem so lucrative is that you "might" be given a lot of vacation time. Is it safe to say that this school holds summer camps and/or requires the FT to be at the school? I know that most PS jobs are hiring for a September 08 start date. Does his hiring to start mid June throw any red flags, i.e., the previous teacher ran out on the school? He is going through EPIK and hasn't been told the school's name. I appreciate any info you may have... |

With the current shortfalls in teacher recruitments AND the increased drive to put a foreigner in EVERY school (new president = new demands) there is no surprise.
Even the elementary school in Yatap (Bundang) was unable to get a FT from the province this year and they are still looking (2 months into the year already).
The shortfall was even worse in the south part of the country.
No panic there mate.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't realize that public school positions were on such a shortage as well. Does it seem weird for the school/recruiter to not allow my friend any contact with previous teachers or his co-teacher until after he has submitted all of his visa documents? Is that "normal?" |

No, it is not particularly normal, and it would make me suspect the recruiter....
but as long as the contract is specifically with a public school system I wouldn't worry too much or lose any sleep over it.
Many times in a public school there is/has been no previous foreign teacher / co-teacher to talk to. This was the case at a couple of schools that I helped prepare for their first foreigner earlier this spring.
For example, there are 10,000 schools in Gyeonggi province. At the get-together last fall there were only ~1000 of us. This means that 9000 schools still have no foreign teacher and are patiently waiting for one.
