Well, it's official. I can't eat beef at restaurants anymore. No more burgers. No more galbi. No bulgogi. Why? The wife is one of the gajillions of Koreans swept into this mass-panic about the re-opening of the market to American beef.
Apparently, if one person is infected with mad cow disease in Korea, all Koreans will eventually come down with it because they have some gene which makes them innately susceptible. This is the kind of nonsense being disseminated on TV, the internet, in the newspapers, etc. And Koreans are eating it up. There have been calls for the impeachment of the president!!
I wouldn't give a hoot nor holler, but my wife has forbade me from eating meat (outside of what she buys and cooks herself) on pain of death. I suppose becoming a vegetarian would be a healthy step anyway, but... |

my missus isnt concerned about mad cow, but about the quality of the beef. Apparently some of the beef sent isnt fit for human consumption. Abit stuffed with chicken flu, now this....although i dont really get caught up in the hype, i love my chicken breasts and am loving the prices haha...

You could just go out into the countrysides. You don't have to go as far south as I am, but in the rural areas, lots of sogogi restaurants are fiercely proud of pointing out that they use Korean beef only. Problem solved.
(Tangental rant: that American beef scare is legit enough. The crap they feed their cows is unbelievable. And they have the balls to be scared of foreign beef. You'd have to feed cows chemical weapon-warheads to get any worse. They'll fib you into paralysis to make that buck. Going local is usually the best anyway, most environmentally sound, too.

So you don't have to give up beef. Just get your gf to show her national pride by finding together those restaurants that blather on about how their beef is all-Korean.
We're in a small city and we found one just five minutes from our home, and a pork place with big banners about how they don't use US pork. It's a big sign saying (in Korean): If you find we're not using 100% pure Korean pork, we'll give you 100,000,000 Won!
BS, but on the other hand, there are times when living closer to the farmers clearly has its benefits. |

About your rant another poster on here on another thread about american beef posted a korean times article that koreans use more antibiotics on their cows and pigs than any other country in the world. So in this case buying local is not necessarily the best option. |

| What would be interesting to know is how wide spread the use of growth hormones is in Korea. We all know the US uses a lot but I wonder what a global, or at least a korea vs US comparison would show. |

Damn! I'm glad you posted that. I was thinking of (among other things) the practice of using bio feed which are parts from other slaughtered cows, reprocessed into edible food for new cows. If I remember right, that was part of what got mad cows infecting new cows. |

Don't even bother adding the "you don't have to eat it part." If she's too stupid to figure that out, then, well, you telling her isn't going to help.
Seriously, how many people have been infected by American beef? How many of those cows originated from the US?? If I remember correctly, some of the meat from the cows mixed up and that were found to have been infected had an origin outside of the US...
On another level, what does mad cow disease do that soju and K-pop doesn't? Does it make you uncontrollably spit everywhere, beat your wife and force your kids into mental slavery by the hagwon estate? If so, Koreans might want to check their own beef... if not... I guess they should ban American beef because there isn't any problem  |
