|

I have a few questions:
How is the workload in terms of managing your time to study and the time you have to commit to work? Do you have enough time to study, write reports and turn in tests?
How much are you paying? Some programs are $800 a course while some are $1500 a course.
If you have completed a Masters online from an accredited university do you feel it has helped career wise?
Just out of curiosity what are you majoring and concentrating in if you are studying to get a degree online?
Do you feel confident in your online degree as you would from a brick and morter school?
If you wanted to teach in Japan would a Masters in English be better than a certificate from CELTA or ITTT? |

I am currently studying on the MA course offered by York University, UK - the course is really helpful with regards to work, provides lots of information etc but it is very time consuming and if you're working as well as studying you're not going to have much spare time.
It is well worth doing - I am really enjoying it and finding it really useful. |

If you want an accredited master's (the only one worth getting really), I am just finishing up a fully online program through UMASS Boston (the University of Massachusetts in Boston). It's a public university with a real campus that also has a fully online program. Once you wade through some of the political stuff (it is in Boston), you learn A LOT about being a good teacher.
More details here:

If you do this program, you will have time for little else besides working and studying. You have to be very self-disciplined to pull this off.
How much are you paying? Some programs are $800 a course while some are $1500 a course.
About $1440 per course.

Haven't officially completed yet so I cannot speak to this, but I want to teach in universities around the world and know that it will help.

Applied Linguistics.
Do you feel confident in your online degree as you would from a brick and morter school?
That's the beauty of this program - UMASS Boston is a brick and mortar school with an online program. Your degree doesn't say it was online, so all you have to do is say you have the degree. Plus the program is an extension of their already successful and established on-campus program, so you know it's quality.

don't know about Japan, but as far as I know a master's trumps all certificates, but that's just from what I know, someone else might know better. |

I have just enrolled in an external Masters degree myself. I'm a little trepiditious about the workload but I seem to have more spare time here than at home. With my Bachelors I managed to work ft, study successfully & have a social life so I'm confident I can do the same here.
Minus the social life which seems non-existant out here in the boonies. |

I'm in the last two semesters of a masters through distance with the University of Southern Queensland in Australia (I live in Canada). I work from home and have two kids and the courseload from this program is extensive...I never have enough time to do anything ( ) but it's a sacrifice I have to make.

This year it's AUD $1,625 per course and there are eight courses in the program.

Yes...it's going to help me net a job in the middle east, my next destination .

It's a Masters of Applied Linguistics.

Yes, I do. I researched the school before I took the program, checked out the content of the courses and compared it to those at other schools to make sure I was getting into a comparable program and looked ahead to the mideast to make sure an online masters was acceptible. I've also backed it up with experience and other qualifications.

I too am studying my master's online - and am so busy I can't write details right now as it's finals time and I have an essay to write.
I'm not doing it in the traditional ESL related majors, however, I will say that.
If you are well organized, you can do it. I went thru hell last semester here in K but managed to keep things going all the same and never had to ask for an extension or anything.
My program is ever bit as hard, maybe more so, than actually at the uni. I will relocate there, however, to finish in person for personal reasons. (next year sometime).
there are plenty of reputable programs out there, just do your research. PM me if you want more specifics.
good luck! |

The programme I did expected 2 hours per day for about 2 years to complete. 2 hours of reading or writing.
The main reason for me doing it was job security. |

Thanks for all the responses. I might do Marketing or English. I eventually would like to go to Spain. It's expensive but I've been there and it's worth living there despite costs. Problem is, is that they hire people who have EU citizenship so it naturally goes to people within the UK. |
