Last January I had to return home because a family member became sick. I was in the 8th month of my contract and I was unable to return to complete it. My school has e-mailed me saying that I owe them the price of my flight ticket back to Canada. I'm not bad-mouthing the school here, but am I legally responsible to pay back the price of the ticket? Just wondering. |

Contract?
It would seem as though you owe them, based on the contracts that I've read since deciding to teach in Korea. |

in a typical contract, schools only have to pay your airfare back to your home country if you complete the contract (12 months). |

They paid your airfare home when they didn't have to.
Ethically, yes, you should absolutely reimburse them.
Their chances of getting the money or making your life difficult if you decide not to pay? As close to zero as imagineable. |

No worries pardner.....mail'em a slab of U.S. beef and they'll forgive any and all debts. In fact, you'll scare'em so bad that they may even give you a pay raise! IEDs? forgetaboutit. Improvised exploding raw U.S. beef is the weapon of the future. |

I figured that. That's not a big deal.
Also if there are any South Africans from that school who are reading this right now. "Hold on, just a few more months, I swear I'm good for it" |
