Jamie Purviance, so-called "barbecue expert" is in
Korea to research local bbq fare. He had the audacity to say this to Korean reporters!!

"When we told Purviance about a recent government effort to promote Korean food like kimchi to the world, he had an unexpected response. "Wouldn't kimchi be a stumbling block to globalizing Korean cuisine? In the U.S., the spicy vegetable dish represents Korean food but most Americans find kimchi too spicy with too much garlic. A lot of people don't even try other Korean food after they try kimchi."

I love the "unexpected response" bit. What, are you implying that our goverrnment is wrong? Next you'll be telling us that the hostage crisis isn't the USA's fault, or that Rain isn't sweeping the world.

About time somebody gave something other than the officially sanctioned gushing response to the question. The media here are only interested in hearing foreigners wax lyrical about their food/culture/society or whatever it is they ask about. I happen to like kimchi, but must admit that it's not for everyone.

What's "rain" I don't think that's something I've had in Korea so far, but then again, I mostly eat Thai.

Is there any Korean food beyond Kimchi? Almost no.

I've found it's not productive to pop Koreans bubbles. One being that kimchi is becoming massively popular around the world.

Also, they like to think that foreigners who don't like kimchi don't like it because it's too spicy. I don't think it's about the spice. It's the sourness and fishyness.

I hate when Koreans say that I must dislike Korean food b/c of hte spice. (Fact: I do dislike a lot of Korean food). This is why I don't like it:

A) Its b/c there's not enough variety of flavor in spices and ingrediets. Its like garlic and gochu are the only things in the spcie cabinet. (both of which I like in moderation)

B) I don't like fermented/pickled food in Western diets (sauerkraut, pickles, etc), and I still don't like it here.

C) Any small hint of fishy taste makes me want to puke. Since just about everything seems to at least have some fish sauce/paste/skankiness in it, that makes it tough.

Promote Korean food? I wonder how many people have never had Korean food. Quite a lot no doubt. Maybe galbi would be good to promote.
