Anyone update to the new 'AVG Free 8.0' edition?
I've heard some people say it caused their computers to slow/crash. Did you have a smooth transition, or was it problematic?
Do you use the 'LinkScanner' component, cos i heard that's very heavy on the memory? |

The linkscanner seriously slowed my surfing down, so I disabled it.
Otherwise, no biggie. AVG is getting bloated though... I will be looking for something else soon. |

I've noticed a slight performance hit since 8.0.
I'm also looking for something lighter. |

I have just flicked over to Avia antivir, it seems okay, but I don't like the nagware after it has done a scan, still just have to hit okay to get rid of the upgrade option so no real biggie. Seems to be less bloat than either avg or avast |

I started paying for antivirus last year. I did a bit of reading and bought Kaspersky. So far it is working very well. Well enough for me to buy another year last month.
My laptop came supplied with Norton, which I didnt like. Both it and AVG let through lots of stuff that AdAware and Spybot would later find. Usually I would get 3 or 4 things per fortnight/month (IIRC) but now I get only one ever 6 months or so.

I used to use Symantec Antivirus corporate. My wife uses AVG Free edition. Frankly, I think that you don't need antivirus unless you download questionable software, or legitimate software from questionable sources. I wrote scripts (just batch files) that enable and disable the scanners so that if I download something I don't entirely trust, I can scan it before I run it. They look like this (of course the AVG ones are different):
[enable]
sc config ccEvtMgr start= auto
sc config ccSetMgr start= auto
sc config DefWatch start= auto
sc config "Symantec Antivirus" start= auto
sc config LiveUpdate start= auto
net start ccEvtMgr
net start ccSetMgr
net start DefWatch
net start "Symantec Antivirus"
net start LiveUpdate
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec AntiVirus\VPTray.exe"
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec AntiVirus\VPC32.exe"
[disable]
sc config ccEvtMgr start= disabled
sc config ccSetMgr start= disabled
sc config DefWatch start= disabled
sc config "Symantec Antivirus" start= disabled
sc config LiveUpdate start= disabled
net stop LiveUpdate
net stop "Symantec Antivirus"
net stop DefWatch
net stop ccEvtMgr
net stop ccSetMgr
Taskkill /IM VPTray.exe
Taskkill /IM ccApp.exe
Taskkill /IM VPC32.exe
net stop LiveUpdate
My wife's laptop is slow, so I try to give it every bit of performance I can.
On my computer, when I'm playing games or doing other things that require performance, I disable it. If I'm away for a while or don't trust what I downloaded, I enable it, usually temporarily just to scan something. If you don't download things from bittorrent, or click all the links in your email that say 'fre3 p0rn', or let random people install things on your computer, you probably won't need to run an antivirus program very often. |

The wife had free access to the computer one weekend and I came home to find that the internet server had been compromised by some spy/adware that she likely installed (though she won't admit it) by accident.
AVG wouldn't find it, even in the updated configuration. Since re-installing XP, I haven't had any problems, but then again, I don't use the computer for much these days. |
