| does anyone know anything about this area? I'm going to be working in Kangnam and living in Seocho-gu at the end of this month. I'll be living near Subway line #3 near Nambu Bus Terminal station. How is the nightlife in that area, restaurants, bars, sights, ect..? I appreciate the help |

I live not too far from Nambu and I enjoy it. It's a little bit quiet here, but a very short bus ride away (maybe 20-30 minutes on foot... I do walk it from time to time) from Gangnam (bars, movie theaters, etc). You can pretty much have the best of both worlds living in this area.
My only complaint is the lack of decent grocery stores. Oh yeah, and the size of my apartment.
Still, I pretty much enjoy it. I've been in the same apartment for about two years now and I'm considering moving out of the neighborhood this summer just because I'm feeling the need for more space. |

If you are at Nambu, just take a bus over to yangjae station, grab the 11-3 bus going to anyang and it will drop you at COSTCO/Emart. At Emart you can get whatever you want, just take a cab back and you're laughing.
Seocho-Gu is a very rich area in Seoul...at some point in the last 10 years a lot of land was splitered off of Kangnam-Gu and given to Seocho-Gu which makes rich now. I work in Seocho-Gu...I have no complaints. |

Agreed. We are a bit closer to costco here, and my scooter makes it even closer.
A bit of a hassle before I got the scooter, but not too bad. I just kept my trips to about once a month. |

thanks guys for the info. I would like to know about the bars and resaurants that are there though? It would be nice to be able to go outside my door and find something very close without having to go to Kangnam.

I'm pretty sure there is a Lotte Mart on the first floor of the electronics mall at Nambu junction. |

Lotte supermarket is there but it is quite small - so not a lot of choice. It does have a bakery and mandu outlet tho'.
The area around the bus station ( over the subway station) has a range of US fast food joints; Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, KFC etc.
THere are a few japanese 'style' restaurants around but not much choice other than korean.
There are plenty of bars, hofs and chicken places for simple drinking.
The clubs are not very exciting.
Gangnam is very close so easy to get to for better nightlife.
I've been there for 15mths. Not a bad place to live.

thanks sojukettle,
that's some great advice. Do you know the names of any expat-bars in the area? |

No expat bars as such. Local only but easy to drink in / at.
I still get suprised when I see another foreigner on the street here
( outside of the bus station).

Sights and Attractions:
It is the closest stop to the Seoul Arts Centre which has a large number of shows / performances / exhibitions ( local and overseas)
Behind the SAC is a 'mountain' ( decent sized hill) which has walking trails for a good workout.
There is a stream / river close by with running / walking / biking trails, exercise stations etc.
The bus station is convenient for travelling out of town.
Gangnam, Itaewon and Hongdae are in easy reach for clubbing restaurants and expat hangouts.
A nice comfortable middle to upper class area.

The stream and park are located around Yangjae...VERY nice area. They have fixed it up quite a lot over the years. |

I like it...I'm near Seoul Natl Uni of Education subway station / Orange and Green Lines...It's dead quiet over here with lots of upper class Korean snobby types. I can walk to allot of cool stuff though and I'm only one subway stop from Gangnam and Dos Tacos !...Itaewon is just a cab hop across the river if I want that scene.
That Nambu area has lots of small music shops and studios and when you walk around on the back streets you can hear kids playing their violins sometimes...It's quite a charming area in spots with plenty of restaurants...If you want clubbing and nightlife you'll need to look elsewhere. |
