Hello all,

I am in my first week here, and have been asked to hand in two weeks of lesson plans (for all grades) by 4 o'clock. I am almost done...except for one little problem....I can not for the life of me think of any songs for the fives and sixes. I am at a total loss! The school has emphasised that they want the following from me every class...a song to start the lesson (does not have to be an ESL song...can just be an English song)...and a game that relates to the lesson! I can't think of games either...but I reckon I can work that out...it's just...I'm 32...I have no kids...I have no idea what sort of western music to play to an 11 or twelve year old Korean child. I just dont want to get off on the wrong foot with the students by playing something so mind numbingly lame that they almost die...or something so hip and awesomely cutting edge that it makes the home room teacher (I have no co-teacher) want to punch me in the nuts.

Thanks guys, this forum has saved what little life I have.

It doesn't have to be a pop song, right?

Go to You Tube, search for "Sesame Street" and start choosing songs/clips.

My students (all of them, 3rd through 6th grade) love the "Pinball Number Count" song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-YcBVEnLT8

Use any of the Schoolhouse Rock Grammar Rock videos. One to start you off... http://youtube.com/watch?v=I7S_B9GcRI0

"Today is Monday." http://youtube.com/watch?v=2oqOGGpmsQY

"The Elephant Song," which everyone seems to like--kid or adult! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yihq8BIhL9c It even comes with subtitles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cBtid-v_JE

And for prepositions, "Where's Shompy?" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Y4pCJXzycM&feature=related

If you want a pop song, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" is good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQfqSWe8eVE&feature=related

If I think I know what "daggy" means... Depends on what sort of school you're at. I'm at an average GEPIK school, fairly low language level.

My third and fourth graders go nuts for it, fifth and sixth not so much any more, because they learned it last year. But last year, the fifth and sixth graders loved it. For longer than I thought they would, too. It seems to have helped with their 12/20 confusion. I was shocked, but they really did like it. I still play it about once every six weeks to 5th/6th and when I do they all yell, "PINBALL!!!"

Everyone likes the Martian 9 song, too. Search for it on You Tube and you'll find it. "Number Nine Cutie" is the proper title I think.

Another resource is Naver. The younger kids will like these songs.

Great! Sorry about the word 'daggy'...an Australianism! I'm gonna play the pinball song...they will either enjoy it...or they won't! I am really grateful for the help...it's a wonderful thing to throw a question out to the wind and have an answer returned!

Burndog,

We have a full A/V player with all the sesame street songs. Also many other kids song and of course click and play karaoke. See Icnelly's link on our main page also, he has loads of kids songs on youtube which are absolutely perfect!

Another good thing is that all resources on EFL Classroom (the above hundreds of videos too) are all downloadable. So if you don't have a stable internet connection, just download. No need to have all the software capture stuff for youtube....

There are songs made by a fellow GEPIK teacher, Simon Kim, and they are on my esnips page as karaoke files (.kfn). I have not loaded them onto my youtube site yet, so here's a link to the 5th grade songs, and a link to the 6th grade songs. Download karafun, and then just click and play. These songs are specific for the chapters of the national elementary text.

Also, bookmark my elementary youtube site. There are 82 songs specifically geared for young learners: easliy enough for an entire year.

Finished loading the songs based from the national text onto youtube, so here's a link to them. There is not a song for every chapter.

SO you've got choices: youtube, or karafun, but either way these songs are a great addition, especially since they're specific for the content of the national textbook.
