I have a dream.
Of two months off, and freshmen english.
I have what appears to be no experience, and of course I would like to work at one of the many distinguished Korean Universities, where I am sure that I will deal with the pressure to publish or perish! Knowing is half the battle, so I have got my meditative shoes on, and am currently in the lotus position, focusing on my navel, and asking for the path to fame and academia.
You guys are plan B. Should have selected you as plan A, but if I was any good at planning I wouldn't be so confused about the best way to reach my destination.
any advice is more than appreciated. I am looking to hide out from the cold cruel world in the hot zone of University ESL. Should I come and teach the kids and try my hand at building rapport with the uni community? or can the miracle be pulled off? Could I be a Korean Proffesor by August?
Thank you for all your help. If all works out, I will send you a letter of recommendation, and/or a thank you note on Seoul State University Letter Head. |

No experience?
Do you have an advanced degree.
While foreign instructors don't publish at unis here (or aren't required to), unis don't usually hire people from overseas. People here who know they like Korea will fill the positions, even the shoddy ones offering 2.0 for a Masters holder.
The top unis don't usually even hire people who haven't worked in Korean unis. |

work at a hagwon for at least a year, two's better, and pay your dues.
people who work at universities should realize how good they have it. |

Teaching ESL at Uni level makes you a "professor"? |

No it doesn't, but it gets you called "professor."

Don't forget public schools as a place to start. People in some universities have it good. Others take crap jobs just to say they work at a uni. The ones that have good jobs at good unis put in the time and effort to get advanced degrees (most of the time) and put in the hard work after them to build their careers. |

| Do your research, take your time, and pay your dues if you have to. Uni jobs sound prestigious but they aren't always gold. |

wait...you have no MA/MS...and no "experience"...and you are not even in Korea...but you want a uni job this fall?
You.
Are.
Awesome.
Seriously tho: come teach at a public school for a year (at least) and then if you want a uni job (provided you aren't picky) you could land one.
Why get an MA/MS in a field you haven't really tried out yet? |

Hey genius, he doesn't mean by the students but by many administrations. Paradoxically you'd probably argue that administrators in Korea wouldn't listen to you. |
