I was arrested today for driving without a "proper" licence. I have an International Drivers Permit which was issued by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) in Canada.

Unfortunately the idiots at the CAA neglected to write the date the licence was issued on one of the pages of the booklet, so the police deemed it invalid. I was under the impression that I was driving legally, but I found out today that that was not the case.... The CAA is definitely going to feel my wrath.

Has anyone else been busted for driving without a licence? What was the fine? I know I will not be allowed to drive in Korea for 2 years, but I'm not sure what the monetary penalty will be.

If anyone can provide me with any advice on how to deal with this I'd greatly appreciate it.

Ouch, that sucks.
Here's a thread from last year about this.

Good luck!

So did the Korean cops put you in cuffs?

Did they refer to you as the 'perp'?

Get a lawyer.

Or you can go down to the DMV office and get your Canadian license exchanged to Korean one. Canadians don't require written or practical test so just pay something like 10,000 won.

It's very easy to just change your CA licence into a Korean licence. 20 bucks. Koreans think a CAA 'international driver's licence' is from Greece for all they know, and is therefore invalid. Korea fighting!

How did they catch you without a 'valid' license. Did you get into an accident or something?

That's another part of it that pisses me off. I was driving in Itaewon and a cop standing at the side of the road flagged me down and asked to see my licence.

I believe what happened is commonly called "racial profiling".

Wow I don't understand how a foreigner could be really that stupid. You should have known dealing with any kind of Transport Authority you should check every detail before you leave the place. There is always some kind of human error,

I mean giving wrath to the Canadian authorities does that prove anything?
For such an important thing as your licence you have to check to make sure everything is done. Of course they made a huge mistake but you should also make sure even double check. They have to deal with many crazy people like you every day, so they are bound to make mistakes. Then you have the knack to call the cops racist. This really shows your intellect.

I hope that they lock you up and throw away the key. That is the best thing they could do for this world to make it a safer place.

That was my thought.
I was flagged down OUNCE, and got a ticket for my troubles. Since then, cops on foot have tried to flag me down about four times. I just look forward and keep on truckin'!

I know a few foreign friends who do drive. One of them mentioned that he had to take a driving test in Korea to get a Korean driver's license before he could drive here.

yes, you have to take a written test - they don't exchange licenses any more

and I've heard they are holding your country's license also? don't know, they didn't mine - I took the test in 2004 and have had a K license ever since.

btw, I would NEVER stop for a cop on foot.

heck, I had one approach me when I was walking once and ask for my pp, I looked at him and said what the f*k for? he said I acted "strange" - I was talking on my cell phone and he was following me - I looked at him, and headed for the train station. He didn't follow.

if anyone was strange - he was, very very odd. I think they want to practice their E and try and wheel in a foreigner for points - jeesh there's no telling what kind of story they'd make up and you'd be a sittin' duck!

no, stay away, if you've done nothing, then don't worry. just don't leave the scene of an accident or something like that.

He was standing in the middle of the road. I suppose I could have run him over, but I'm pretty sure the penalty for hit and run on a police officer is a lot more severe.
