I am off to Jeju for a week, at the end of May. My plan is to hire a bicycle, and cruise around the perimeter of the island.
I would be really interested to hear of anyone's experiences doing something similar.
Can you easily hire a bike with a large-ish frame? Any recommendations re good bicycle-rental shops?
Has anyone accompanied a Korean cycle-trip with sleeping under the stars (aka wild camping)?
Looking forward to hearing any comments you may have... thanks! |

In early June of 2006 I rented a car and went around the coast (I recommend you get off the coastal road in the northwest - stick to the coast amap - as more local, nicer roads exist on that part of the coast)

There were PLENTY of Koreans on bike trips around the island. I drove past groups of 2,3 mostly, with some 8-12 processions. YES, they just camp. I was a bit jealous and swore next time I go I was gonna bike it.
I recommend you start in Jeju-si and head west, counterclockwise.
Enjoy! |

I got some info from another source....
"There is a through road (national road no. 12) all around the island, but you should avoid that road wherever possible."
"If you enjoy going over a mountain pass, then "road 1100" is a must. It runs north-south on the west side of the volcano, 1100 refers to the elevation in meters. I think the descents on both sides are the longest descents (yes, also climbs) you can find in Korea."
"I also like road 1115, on the south side. It runs about parallel with the contours of Halla-san, so that it is fairly flat. But it runs elevated at about 400 m high, so that you have nice scenic views."
Any other experiences out there? |
