Hi all. The Korea Herald will start a new section for foreigners starting tomorrow (Tuesday). It will be three times a week.

Expat living is for all foreigners living in Korea. It is dedicated to the issues that affect foreigners' daily lives. Columnists will explore finances for expats, law, entertainment, books, food, style, fitness, women's issues, EFL, and more.

If you have anything you think should be covered in the section, something pertaining to foreigners in Korea, please contact me any time.

All feedback is appreciated.

Cheers Matthew. It will be interesting to see the new stuff covered. Out of interest, has the Herald had much feedback about that new cartoon strip, 'Ssomi and Hobo'? I'm curious to see what others have had to say about it.

I wish more people than foreigners read that paper. There have been some interesting articles as of late.

Hi guys, thanks for the questions. I actually don't know where to pick up a Herald in Mason (outside Seoul, Busan distribution is sketchy). But it is available there. Try a big 7/11 or Family Mart.

Most people are surprised to hear that our readership is 2/3 Korean.

Expat Living is on page 18, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.

I want to emphasize that is for all foreigners in Korea, not any particular segment. That should be pretty clear for anyone reading tomorrow's Expat Living. Migrant worker health ("Dying for health care") is the lead story, with two more stories on migrant works' health.

I do realize that this is mainly a EFL forum, and that most people reading this are teachers, and there will be an EFL column also.

Most coverage will be about our daily lives, for example, Wednesday will look at interior design, finance and art.

The only place i have seen them in masan is in a little bookstore there by Kyoungnam University, there by the front gate. You could try to subscribe to it online but that will go ignored due to being a foreigner. Tried that one three times before giving due to no answer from them.

Any chance we can be referred to as overseas residents rather than foreigners? I'm not normally the PC type but......

Many people find the word 'foreigner' - the English word 'foreigner', not 외국인 - pejorative because of its connotations of exclusion.

It'd be nice if Koreans became more aware of the more subtle levels of formal and informal register in English and it'd surely be a start if people from overseas in Korea actually used these terms themselves.

"Overseas residents" sounds like we reside overseas from Korea.

Something different then. 'People from overseas'?

I'm not THAT bothered, obviously, but I'm rather tired of hearing foreigner all the time and I've always had the impression it's an informal expression and not one to be used everywhere. For example, if you said "I like working with foreigners" in a job interview....

What about "evil drug-using, fake degree-holding, disease-spreading invaders"? That's how KBS and other outlets have us labeled.

Round eyes! Wink Wait, round eyes ---> Shocked

I don't know what to term to use. We're not all legal aliens, and as some idiots recently demonstrated an another thread, some aliens don't even know they ARE aliens. We aren't all immigrants, we aren't all Westerners.

Scapegoated minority?

Actually, the "foreigner, foreigner, foreigner" thing makes me crazy, too. Yet, a few days ago when the woman at the bakery asked, in perfect English, "Are you a foreigner?" I said, "Of course."

(Actually I laughed and said, "Me?"

"Yes."

"Of course.")

I can't even escape it when I'm talking. Sigh.
