Wondering... those of you in Seoul already, what is a rough estimate of your total living costs per month... not necessarily a breakdown of items or anything, but how much are you spending a month on just living, eating and breathing, etc.? I just need, I think, one total number, considering also some of your usual entertainment habits thrown in. I'm not talking about big bar hoppers or anything, just you average, somewhat boring people who are interested in saving and eating at home... how much are you spending on your life there per mo.? Curious. Thanks for the help.

You can save as much as you want, but the more you want to save the more uncomfortable your life will be.

Prices in Seoul are going up like everywhere else in the world.

I can live pretty frugally. My interests aren't expensive. So, taking that into consideration, any basic number you have in mind? I often read 1mil W in total monthly costs, of course. But the reason I post this is I only read that in old recommendations about living in Korea, on recruiter sites, or old posts. Just wondering what someone is spending now, in May 2008, to get by in a studio apt.

If I had to name a number, I'd say 1 or 1.1 million to live an average life. That is without rent.

Thanks. That's exactly what I was wondering about.

That's exactly right. Comfort means spending more money. I hardly ever buy western foodstuffs and still don't save one milliona month or more like some people here do. But I like shopping, cooking, going out, traveling, etc.

About the eating at home bit. I eat at home a lot, since I love to cook, but I'm telling you, fruits and veggies here are NOT so cheap.

Really? I heard that they were in the open markets... or at least cheaper than the grocery stores. But I know little.

So, it's looking like 1 mil. won, to live decently. Again, my "decently" isn't high maintenance. I'm pretty simple. It's all good information to help me prepare. Thanks everyone.

And you may well find that you can eat out korean food for less than you could do it cooking for yourself .... and in that I am thinking relatively healthy food

Agree. You can get a tasty, full meal for 6 or 7000 won. I'm talking about a full plate of fish with plenty of side dishes, all for that price!

I'd say you could live very comfortably for 1 million won per month, tops.

If you're really about saving, it's easy to be comfortable on 750k. You don't have to go to Western restaurants or Starbucks, a lot of food / household stuff / clothes etc can be bought cheap (esp. online), .. . Anyone who says "I'm really trying to save but cant help spending at least a million a month", really isn't trying hard enough.. probably by going out too much, turning down company housing or jetting off to Thailand at every opportunity.

I lived on 800k- 1mill a month and did a lot of partying. The key for me was eating mostly Korean food and not spending loads furnishing my apt with stuff I couldn't take home.

We're a bit under 2 million a month, but there are 3 of us, so I am happy with that.
