I agreed to do conversation classes at my school. The classes are 2 hours long, with a break at the halfway point. The students are middle-schoolers with a fairly high level of English ability. Some are what I would consider fluent, and have lived in English-speaking countries for extended periods of time. The classes have 8-12 students.
The problem that I'm having is actually getting conversation started in these classes. I have a book that I can use to introduce topics, and I use these sometimes. The problem is that I feel that only about 25-35% of the classtime is spent with students talking. I can't seem to get them to converse with each other. It seems like I spend most of the time introducing the topic, and then peppering each student with questions to get his/her opinion. I feel that in a conversation course it should be more like 75-80% student talking, and a little bit of intro from the teacher.
Any suggestions? |
