You should not really be denied a legal work visa in the future for overstaying a visa. However, did you work during that time you were in Korea on a visitor visa ? You could be denied if they think you were working illegally. You are technically not allowed to teach without a valid E2 or other proper visa. You cannot teach one day legally without the visa.

As for knowing ... you are the person ultimately responsible for your visa. You are supposed to know, if you don't, that is technically not an excuse. It's your responsibilty .... but who ever knows.

Which is bull shit. If they stamp me for 10 years, I figure I can stay 10 years.

Nice one. They make the mistake and then blame you? I overstayed once by a few days and couldn't get an E2 until a while passed, at another immigration office.

You might as well have painted a big red flag on yourself.

First Mistake: The ones posted.

Second Mistake: Trying to see rhyme or reason in Korean immigration processes. You can look forever, and you won't find anything.

Then again, I got a visa and lied about my previous activities, and they could have easily found out, because my 1st employer had filed for a visa. I somehow got away with it. So, I would say, be ready for trouble but there is a good possibility you won't get any.

If you want to plead your case, I think you are SOL. Correct me if I am wrong.

The unfortunate fact of life here is, you won't ever know until you apply. It might be a good idea to chat with the Aussie Embassy in Seoul and see if they are able to make some enquiries for you. They are a pretty good mob to deal with. Personally, I don't think you will have a problem getting your new visa.

i renewed my tourist visa twice.. i wasn't working

i had immigration call my wifes parents house and 2 weeks later, they just turned up on the door.. my point is, these guys seem to be right on the job, they tend not liking a foreigner renewing a tourist visa. as for what it means for your future visa applications i don't know but i got a work visa without question when i applied for the first 1. that said, it is their call, you do not have to actually found doing privates, if they want to knock you back, it is their right... i don't care want anybody says. if they have a reason, be it true or false, there is nothing you can do.
maybe stuff around with some legal process but it won't help you get into the country that 1st time the problem arises.

edit: if you are coming back in on another tourist visa that is.. it maybe very different if you have the correct paperwork and the e2 approved by the korean embassy in japan.. if that is the case, it should be obvious when you apply for the 'blue paper' before you do the visa run anyway.

either way, they still don't have an obligation to let you in to the country..
