Hey, in seven months, I have never received one receipt. The money gets sent straight to my bank account but they have been punctual about it. Should I be worried, though?

I've had the same problem with my boss. A pay stub is probably necessary for tax refunds, or for the inevitable struggle when your boss decides to *beep* you over, so I'm a bit worried. I've never heard of a hagwon boss being honest simply through the honor system.

If everything else is cool, I wouldn't be too concerned. But if you have other problems, then I'd insist on the paper that shows all deductions.
If I were you I'd also remember that payed is not correct and that paid is.

I'd be suspicious. I would determine how much I should be getting paid after deductions (tax, insurance, pension) and determine if the deductions are proper. Next, I would learn whether or not the hakwon has made pension contributions.

You should ask and get all of your back pay stubs.

You may need them when you want to do wire transfer, filing taxes, etc..

They don't take out pension for me. They just deduct my utillity bills from my pay and then pay me straight. Is this a problem?

Oh right...paid. I am still a little fuzzy minded from this weekend.

How much are they taking out for taxes and utilities? If you pay more than 2-3% taxes or more than 30,000/month for utilities, you're getting screwed.

If you feel there's no problem then there's no problem. Just wait until your 11th month......

I usually lose about 150,000-200,000 won on utillities and my phone bill. My utillity bills get sent to me, though, and then I hand them to my boss. I don't see how he could be cheating me that way.

Your employer is a bucket of shit. He/she knows that deductions should be made from your monthly salary for income taxes, medical, and pension. I can see why your employer doesn't want to give you a pay receipt.

So how is this bad for me? Are you saying he will screw me at the very end?

It's bad for you because,
1. You've lost out on pension, if you are earning 2.1mill that works out to 1million Won out of YOUR pocket!
2. No medical, maybe you haven't been sick, or maybe when you visited the doctor your boss shelled over 10-15K to help cover your expenses, but if you are in a serious accident or have a serious illness, I don't see him digging deep into his pockets ESPECIALLY as your productivity dropped to zero.
3. At some point down the line, not paying tax could come back to bite you in the ass.
4. No proof of income/payment. If he decides to screw you around month 11, it will be much harder to fight for what's yours without a paper trail.
5. (Any other suggestions)

I've been teaching for 6 years now and have never received a pay stub. I think if you weren't getting paid in full or on time, then it's time to worry but a lack of a pay stub is no big deal.

A hagwon boss is no different than any other business owner as some are honest and some are not. Getting a pay stub or not has no bearing on whether your boss is honest or not.

If you aren't Canadian or American then you've saved yourself about $1000 for the year as you wouldn't be eligible to get your pension contributions back.

Your taxes will either be about 2.5% or 3.3% depending on how your school works. Not a big deal either way as we're talking about $5/week. As for utilities being 30,000/month, they must be living in a box. My apartment is pretty nice and I pay about 130,000/month for utilities. My cell phone is about 40,000/month.

There's no way that not getting a pay stub can hurt you as all you need to do is go to your bank and they will print out your bank statement for the last year or so. This wil prove who sent the money, when and how much you've been paid, and you also have your contract as proof of how much you should be paid. I think a more important issue is to check if you have a contract that has been signed by the school. Most teachers just sign the contract but don't have one signed by the school. I would just tell the school that I left my contract at home so please give me another copy and to sign it. No hard feelings or suspision by the school then.

Also, have you tried asking for a pay stub? Sometimes all you have to do is ask and you'll get what you want from your school.

Well, I forgot to mention that's spring time utilities (i.e. a little water for a shower or dishes, keeping the lights on 30-60 minutes a day, and nothing else). In the winter or summer, your gas or electric bills will probably top six figures, but holy God, what kind of rocket-propelled food processor are you running that sucks up 130,000 won/month in the spring time?

EDIT: as for living in a box, I think it's a fair bet that Kentucker's fabulously altruistic hagwon boss didn't shell out for a large apartment. Maybe I'm wrong, though. The fact that you've been here six years probably goes a long way to explaining why you have a nice place; all the first-year teachers I've met (especially with boss-chosen housing) live in boxes, though that's really no stigma for a young man.

I live in a small studio apartment. Not sure why my utillities are so high.
