So I was out on the town on Saturday night...
My crew and I were out and about in Hongdae runnin amuck and I decided to shut her down. Hopped a cab and away I went. I am a noob to the city and only know how to get home by way of telling the cab driver Kondae Yuk (Konkuk University Station). Ive been here a month and a half and it has always worked.
So we are cruising around for awhile and the cabbie stops and is motioning as if this is the place. Its about 12 bucks for the fare and Im pretty sure this is not my stop. I tell him Kondae Yuk a few times, saying it both slow and fast and he assurese me this is the stop. I get out and wander around for awhile and come to the conclusion this is not even close to anywhere that I recognize. So determined to get home, I hop another cab.
Same thing happens again! About a 12 dollar fare and the cabbie stops in an area that looks nothing like where I was supposed to be. So now I am wondering what the F is going on so I call my buddy and he talks to the guy for a bit and even texts me directions in Korean to show the guy. He assures me this is the stop so I get out... wander around for awhile again...
I contemplate whether I should crash at the closest train station and wait till the marnin to grab a train but I just want to get home as I have lots to do the next and and have some money left over cuz we had a load of free drinks at bar boom earlier in the night... so I hail yet another cab and thankfully this guy is legit and takes me home... 15 dollars from where I was dropped off... good times.
Should have wore a trojan...

When I flew in the last time, there was a taxi driver who spoke great English, so I wanted him to take me to the Hyatt, which is supposed to be two minutes from the airport. He asked me where I was from and I when I said, "America," he said, "Yeah, yeah, yeah," sounding disgusted. Well, it didn't matter to me, so I got in his cab and he kept driving and driving and driving and driving and dropped me off at a love motel (Haej Hotel?) in the absolute middle of nowhere in some rural part of Incheon. I was too tired to complain, so I got a room, and I'm 99.9% sure he got a cut for dropping me off there. The next morning, I was awaken at 5 a.m. by a rooster. I shit you not. A rooster. On the bright side, I met the greatest hot chick when I asked her directions when I was walking away from the motel with my luggage. She helped me get to Seoul and gave me her e-mail address and we keep in touch. And I bet staying in that dump instead of the Hyatt saved me over 100,000 won.

Check your pronunciation. Learn another landmark in your area where you can be dropped off at. Have your address written out in Korean and keep it in your wallet for times like these. Simple. Sounds like a rough way to end the night!!

Well, that's not very smart, especially with a paid girl. But odds are you are fine. Don't make a habit of this, though.

When I first arrived, I carried a card in English and Korean with my address and even included a map.

Did you even think to yourself 'If I post this it will serve no constructive purpose and I'll come across as a patronising fool?'

My reaction to your reaction = Shocked Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Shocked

Only kidding, I'm bored.

Are you aware that your ARC ID has an address of your house on it? If you can't talk to the cabbie, show him your address on the ARC. Also if you want to get to a train station write the name of the station in Korean. Basic survival skills. I have no sympathy for you.

I think it's pretty obvious that "paid girl" = "cabby."

Embarassed Didn't realize it was a joke. I thought you were only going on the thread title. I've done it.

If you want to get technical I think the currently accepted romanization of 역 is yeok.

Well, if Julius is British, it's pretty close, but for an American "yok" sounds more like 약 than 역. If you can't be bothered to learn Korean pronunciation the closest approximation for an American is probably either the "aw" sound in "paw" or the "uh" sound in "hut."
