So, from a nation of 33 million, not exactly known for it's athletic prowess (outside of hockey):
Owen Hargreaves, born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. Winner of two Champions League Titles with Bayern Munich and now Manchester United. Also winner of a total of 5 league titles in Germany and England. Top player of England's last World Cup team.
Steve Nash. Unwanted by all but one small U.S. college Division 1 team, Santa Clara, out of high school in Victoria, B.C. Rises to be a 2-Time NBA MVP.
Larry Walker. Former Junior league hockey goalie in B.C., gives up hockey to play baseball, wins MLB MVP, 6 tool player (fielding, throwing, running, hitting, hitting for average, hitting for power). Walker's career season came in 1997, when he hit .366 with 49 home runs, 130 RBI, 33 stolen bases, and 409 total bases, en route to becoming the first Canadian player to win the MVP Award..
Mike Weir. Ontario golfer who became a Masters Champion before Phil Mickelson managed to do it.
That's my Canadian flag waving for the month. Somewhere, Todd Swift is smiling. |
