Looking to upgrade my gpu and wondering about my choice. I'm mainly doing so for HD LCD watching HD movies and light gaming. Was leaning towards the ATi but after reading reviews I'm treading water on it. A lot of folk on other boards not liking the 3870 because of driver issues even though the 3870 has slightly better performance and HD quality. Also, something about having to disable Areo in vista when opening a small window to view HD content. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I want to purchase soon.

I'll give you 50,000 for that.

Will someone please tell him what one to buy.

He keeps speaking in numbers t and letters to me - "9600GT, 3870 GPU, 9600GT 3870 what one what one"

I have been feigning interest for weeks PLEASE HELP HIM make a decision before he stops speaking any intelligible form of American and replaces it with just digits and letters.

It's a toss up. The chips themselves are virtually identical in relative performance terms.

That problem about Vista changing the desktop to Basic when you open some video.........that's nothing to do with the graphics card. That's because a program has been used to open the video that doesn't support Vista Aero.

I would just shop around for either card. Find the best price, GDDR4 memory, and maybe a Zalman VF1000 fan on there.

My choice? Sapphire HD3870 with Zalman VF1000. Available in Yongsan for 190,000.

Now, as Squirrel says, just buy something and leave us alone!! Laughing

Yeah...that's a good choice. Would you say that's a big card size-wise?

I can't see the length of that card on Danawa. The Sapphire website should give that info. I wouldn't worry though. It's designed for an ATX case.

You can always do what I did.............. take out the 3.5'' HDD cage, then move your HDD up into a higher bay, thereby having an uninterrupted airflow from the front intake fan directly onto the graphics card. Works great for me.

Not that my 3870 wouldn't fit........it did.........I just thought the airflow was much better that way.

So, the HD3870 has NO driver issues. Funny there should be so much commentary about them having so.

I've had absolutely no driver issues with mine.

If anything, there's a much more serious driver issue with Nvidia. The notorious, "NVLDDMKM display driver has stopped working and has recovered". This issue, shared by thousands of other Nvidia users, was the main thing that made me switch to ATI after 4 years of buying Nvidia cards. It made many PC games unplayable. I don't think Nvidia/MS have resolved it yet.

These cards are certainly very beefy but what games other than Crysis need that power? I have a 8800GTS 320mb card and it handles everything I've played including Crysis.

gojimal jengee! Twisted Evil

On topic: The 9 series from Nvidia does have the same chipset at the 8 series. Therefore, I'd wait until they do some real overhaul. I don't know much about Ati, but, am beginning to check things out. I agree with a poster above. Just go with an 8800gt or gs and you'll be fine for light gaming.

I ended up getting the HD3870. It was a good price for the power it provides. 180,000 for the Sapphire Toxic (oc version) had to go for that as I couldn't fit anything bigger in the case. Bought a Zalman 600W PSU 108,000 and I think that was a fairly good deal....very quiet and provides great ventilation. Also, picked up a seagate 500g 7200, 32m 86,000 price has come down nicely on it. All in all, got some decent parts that can be used if I want to build a new rig later on. Still have all the older parts packed away.

Very Happy Yes, an 8800GT will be fine for light gaming, but only light gaming Wink

You mean you're buying parts for a PC but not building one yet? And your old parts are packed away? Just collecting computer components then?
