Steven Tyler has admitted himself to rehab after 20 years or so of sobriety. You know that you are a top notch substance abuser when you impressed Jerry Garcia with your capacity to ingest.
Who do you think was/is the greatest "drug" band? Is greatest even an appropriate word for such activities?
Do drugs have the ability to improve the creativity aspect of a band? |

i think that queens of the stone age currently have the title for most drugged/drug-enhanced band.
if you're josh homme, you're well over 6 feet and around 210 and a former football player, so you probably have a massive capacity for intoxication.
the song "feel good hit of the summer" - "nicotine valium vicodin marijuana ecstacy and alcohol.... c-c-c-c-c-co-caaaaaaine!" speaks volumes.
i'm also fond of the band HIGH ON FIRE whose name says it all. |

The greatest drug band? I certainly couldn't overlook Aerosmith for their indulgences. I'd have to throw Motley Crue in there too. Hell, Nikki Sixx was actually declared dead from a heroin overdose, then revived by paramedics, only to go back home and shoot up again.
Also, while not a band, you really can't forget Ozzy. Anyone who gets so high that he licks his own piss off the ground, and follows that up by snorting a line of ants...well, he had some drug issues.
Now, do drugs have the ability to improve the creative side of a band? I don't know. I can say (for example) that I prefered The Beatles' music when they were in their drug stage, and I certainly can't imagine someone like Jimi Hendrix not having drugs as a part of his musical creativity.
That being said though, is it really worth it to risk so much by doing drugs? I can't say it is. What could someone like Hendrix have produced, had he not died at such a young age due to his excesses? |

All forms of art and drugs seem to complement each other. Think how much great literature would be missing without opium, music without pot, uhh screensavers without LSD.
I'd venture a guess, having never partaken of any of these substances myself, that drugs do not necessarily enhance creative ability but simply make one more willing to be creative.
In short: it takes less effort to be creative when you're messed up.
I'd have to say the Beatles are the best "drug" band. Yellow submarine on shrooms, not that I'd ever do that, is simply amazing. |

A drugs and Rock n Roll thread? Jesus, it must be my lucky day!

Generally, in terms of sex, booze, drugs and music, the Rolling Stones, but there are several drug specialists, as it were, like Depeche Mode (heroin), Pink Floyd (LSD) and Oasis (the cocaine and alcohol use but recreational only of regular kinds of folks).
Tool are overtly an LSD (and other halluciogenics such as Mescaline) band. Adam Jones said these things changed his life and Maynard admitted to doing a ton of acid in college.
What all this goes to show is that Rock n Roll, the coolest thing ever created by man, and illegal drugs are powerful allies and it is therefore sinful to abstain. Tool, the Beatles and Pink Floyd did lots of drugs, therefore drugs should be compulsory and abstainers considered indecent.

Anyone who's ever smoked a joint and plugged in a guitar knows the answer is YES YES YES!
But there's a fine line between the stimulation of creativity and the debilitation of it. |

Well, I like this thread, but asking who is or was the biggest drug band is like asking which Kenyan can run the farthest....its a big old tie!
But with that in mind, The Grateful Dead should get the pioneer award. Mid to late 60's and those crazy parties they had...everyone was tripping balls...the even tried to get Hugh Heffner but his security guard took care of his coca cola so they could not dose him....
Check out this link...everyone except Hugh is high as kites here...classic!

The Dead should win on this setting the bar! |
