Well almost. He tried to bust me really hard.

I only work part time. One of my gigs is a Korean kindergarten. These schools are not allowed to hire someone on a E2 visa, even part time. So this morning there I am teaching (read this as playing games) my students. Big man in uniform knocks on door and tells me to follow him. We go downstairs to the owners office to chat.

He informs me that it is illegal for me to teach at this school on an E2 visa. I tell him that I know that. He tells me that he has to arrest me and then I will be deported. I tell him that I don't think that will happen. I tell him I do not have an E2 visa. He says that that is even worse and now I will definitely get fined and deported. He mumbles something about people like me hurting Korea and endangering children. I tell him I still don't think I will be deported. He asks for my ARC. I show him and watch his face when he notices that I have a F5 visa. He does an about face.

He starts smiling and telling me that it is great that I am here helping children learn English. I should keep up the good work helping educate Korean children.

When I asked him why he came to check on me, he said that they received a complaint from someone about me teaching there. He said that if they get a complaint they have to check it out. He apologized to me for wasting my time. He also mentioned he was making a note of this in their system so if someone complains again he won't have to trouble me.

The owner and I think the lady in the kindergarten across the street called immy and was trying to get my kindergarten in trouble. Seems this kindergarten has called and complained to immy and the education office before.

Good times. If you are working illegally be carefully. THEY'RE WATCHING YOU!

Poor guy. Because of you, he cannot fulfill his busted-foreigners quota. Great story OP. Haha, you are a bad teacher one minute and you are a good teacher the next minute. I'm gonna have to try that someday once I qualify for that F-5. Smile

What a terrific example of the benefit of doing it the right way. Sure there are struggles and the system can be frustrating at times, but this story give me reason to be thankful for the F5. I am glad the OP posted this excellent story. It tells you about the cutthroat efforts of the private sector in some places as they try and sway business their way.

Must have been a nice little break from teaching, no wonder you strung it out so much.

Does this mean that teaching kindy as a second job could never be sanctioned by immi and recorded on back of ARC as Manticore (see seperate thread) proposes to do ?

Too bad you didn't get from him the name of your accuser. Or, I suppose you could just casually drop in on the person you suspect and flash the ARC at her and laugh!

The operant word here is "kindy."

Under the law, E-2s are only permitted to teach at certain types of institutions:
  • Educational facilities (primary school and above) or an attached language institution
  • Organizations with a training institute for the employees
  • Foreign language institutes registered by the Article 3-2 of the Presidential Decree of Institutes' Establishment, Operation & Private Instruction Law
    - Multiple curriculum can be registered and performed
    - Applicable to foreign language institutions corresponding to those described under Article 12 of the Presidential Decree of Immigration Act.
  • Facilities which is set up based on the law of lifetime education and coincides with the standard the Minister of Justice made.
  • Lifetime education facility set up and operated by the nation or the local autonomous entity based on other laws.
  • Institutions or corporations for developing abilities for employment which are set up based on the employees' job training promotion law.

I actually emailed immy before I started working there and tehy told me that if it is a real kindy then someone on an E2 can't work there. If it is a kindy combined with a language school (think ECC, Little America, etc) then it is OK for an E2 to be a part time teacher.

It is tempting, but I don't know for sure. But if it was the kindy across the street., they'll get the idea when they see me still going to work.

I figured they deserve it for making me waste so much of my time in the immy office over the years.

I know of some people who have been busted for teaching privates, but most of the people I've known over the years who got caught were caught teaching illegally in a school.

I think it's ridiculous that if you're on one kind of visa you're doing a terrible thing, but if you're on another you're doing a great thing, regardless of your qualifications or job performance.

It should be illegal for any grown man to teach kindergarten.

You wouldn't have any reason for that assertion? I mean, besides that it's just a jerkish thing to say and you can't help yourself.

Yeh, we should let children all be schooled by women so they can grow up to be insecure men who feel the need to belittle other men. Maybe the women could all wear hockey uniforms while they teach kindy so we are sure the kids have an authentic masculine role model to idolize when they grow up?
