| I swear, I am tired of being mr nice guy. Sometimes, I get confused on how hard to be on them. I mean they are just first graders. They are getting out of control, though. Do any of you yell or act angry towards your first graders? In fact, none of my clsses pay any kind of attention to me any more. I'm friggin sick of it. Yelling doesn't even work. |

I agree. They are quite easy to teach at my middle school, and that's with 40 students in each class. Last year's 2nd graders, which I hated to teach, have become 3rd grade nightmares for most teachers at my scool. Luckily I only teach 1st and 2nd grade this year |

My first grade high school students can be pretty tough sometimes. kentucker, yelling doesn't work! It's like teaching a pig to sing--it wastes your time and annoys the pig.
I make my students write for punishment; something catchy like "I will always pay attention when the teacher is speaking"--sometimes in English or (if I'm feeling generous) Korean. They can write it 100 times and if they're late to their next class they have to explain why. No one can leave until everyone finishes. Then afterwards I ask them if they prefer a speaking and listening class or a writing class. If anyone says "writing," I give them 20 more sentences then ask them again.
The next time things get out of hand, I tell them if they can't listen while I speak and speak while I listen, we'll have a writing assignment today. Then if I have to make them write, I just show them the PowerPoint of the day's lesson and have them copy each slide 10 times.
So far, I've only had to do this twice with the whole class. Sometimes if only a couple of students are causing trouble, I'll have those kids write for the duration of class...usually just copy the lesson's objectives, minimum 50 times. |

I'm talking about elementary. Although my middle schoolers are all also loud as hell. When the class is so loud that you can hardly hear yourself think then how else are you supposed to get anyone's attention besides yelling? My bosses yell all of the time at the kids and get really good obedience. They even told me that my problem is that I don't give the kids dirty looks when I'm mad. I just yell without true anger in my eyes. My bosses come in and yell loud as they can sharply while looking like they want to kill the students. It always works, though. The kids get scared straight. I am thinking I need o employ these tactics. |

While I don't yell at my first graders, I will give them looks that tell them I am not a happy camper. It works much better than shouting. However, I tried it once with a 6th grader who is always messing and joking around but I couldn't keep a straight face for long enough. It kinda backfired on me! |

Perfect a 'death stare'. I'm not a mean teacher, but I have been able to quiet/intimidate kids with my 'angry teacher' look. I don't yell...just fold my arms and look at them sternly. Like Mom used to do.
Actually made a kid cry last year (Elm.grade 2). Poor sod!  But he was being a total wanker! |
