Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg says "the days of Sony snowing the consumers and the press are over," that the company has failed to deliver on numerous promises, and challenges Sony's latest European PS3 sales figures.
"We have been fighting Sony's promises from the day we entered the market," Greenberg told Destructoid. "Three years ago at E3 they showed what PS3 games would supposedly look like with the Killzone 2 video, that we are now learning will ship four years later. That means that we will have shipped Gears of War and Gears of War 2 before they can even get Killzone out the door.
"Think back to GDC 2007 when Sony promised to leap ahead in online with the Sony Home unveil. Here we are two years later and multiple delays for a product that appears to have little to no buzz. Where are the achievements? The friends list integration across all games? Where is the long-promised video store? Where are all the other products using and networking with their CELL chip? How come Blu-ray did not result in better games? What happened with Sixaxis and rumble? Where is the complete 1080p game library we were promised? If Blu-ray as they said would be such a catalyst to PS3 console sales, then why have PS3 sales over the past couple of months not seen any lift since the format victory?" |
This is coming from a Microsoft Exec, so take it with a grain of salt. I think he's got a lot of valid points. |

Sony customers still waiting for free PS3s
Asher Moses
May 5, 2008 - 11:54AM
Sony Bravia LCD TV buyers have been waiting for up to four months for the company to make good on its promise to give them a free PlayStation 3 games console.
Word of the delays comes days after smh.com.au revealed that customers taking part in Samsung's two-for-one LCD TV promotion - whereby buyers of a big-screen Samsung TV set were offered an extra smaller LCD for free - had been waiting up to five months for their bonus TV sets.
Between December 21 last year and January 28, Sony promised that anyone who bought a Bravia high-definition LCD TV set would receive a bonus PS3, as long as they had their receipt and could cite the TV's serial number.
It promised the PS3 consoles would be delivered within 28 days, but four months after the offer began many customers are still waiting.
Readers responding to last week's story about the Samsung delays complained of poor communication by Sony and rejected the company's claims it had run out of stock of PS3s, saying there was plenty of stock in most stores.
"Marketing managers should take note as this type of failed scheme are turning people away in droves from their brand," one reader fumed.
Sony Australia announced in January that 28,000 people had taken up the Bravia promotion. Last week it said 238,000 PS3s had been sold in Australia in its first year.
Tony Barbour, head of strategy and brand development at Sony Australia, issued a terse statement in response to the customer complaints.
"This was an extremely successful promotion and the PlayStation 3 has been an extremely desirable product," he said.
"Sony has worked as quickly as possible to fulfil customer orders, which includes sourcing both Bravia LCD TVs and PlayStation 3 consoles from overseas, in order to satisfy the demand. We appreciate the patience of our customers during the delivery period."
A reader, who did not want to be named, said he was told by Sony his bonus PS3 would be delivered "from May 12".
The NSW Office of Fair Trading advises people affected by such delays to first try to work the issue through with the company, after which they could lodge a false and misleading representation complaint with the department.
The department can contact Sony on consumers' behalf and, if a satisfactory result is not reached, the customer could take the matter further to the Consumer Trade and Tenancy Tribunal, where an order could be obtained.
In response to widespread complaints from Samsung customers who still have not received their bonus TV sets, a product review site, Done Sold, is calling on people to come forward and join a class action lawsuit against the company. |

I've been very happy with my PS3, although I use it primarily to watch Blu-ray movies. It also upscales very nicely, and streams music quite well. I have come to enjoy that feature a lot.
It also has a very, very low failure rate. The X-box... um.... aren't they at a failure rate of 40% now, or some huge number?
The X-box is cool for as long as it works, but newer PS3 games are looking better than what they do on the X-box. Bragging about Gears of War is sort of an old battle-cry now.
I'm sure this is what he's upset about (although I wish I could find a newer article), although I read that Microsoft is getting some flack that, despite there being 2x as many X-box 360s out in the world, they aren't selling a whole lot more copies of GTA IV than the PS3. This flies in the face of the recent 360-group cries about nobody buying the PS3 to play games (saying that the PS3 is a movie machine).

The MS exec's remark about the Blueray seems a bit like he is upset over HD-DVD loss. I never expected Blueray to lead to better games. But the PS3 has taken a few hits lately. Monster Hunter which is a huge hit in Japan just got moved over to the Wii. So if Capcom doesn't port to the PS3 as well, it's possible many PS users in Japan may switch over to Wii. |

The PS3 and the Wii are two totally different animals at different resolutions.
"Ports" between the two just wouldn't sell.
If they were to port a Wii game to anything, it would be the PS2. |

GTA IV was on the market long enough in April, however, to become the No. 1-selling game in the country. The 360 version took the top spot, selling nearly twice as many copies (1.8 million) as its PS3 counterpart (1 million). Sandwiched in between the two, taking the No. 2 spot, was Mario Kart for Wii, which sold 1.12 million copies.

With an almost 2:1 ratio, I don't see why Xbox should worry -- especially since I heard the Xbox version has more potential for other add-ons and such. |

So there are over 2x as many X-box 360s in the world, and there were more copies of GTA4 sold to 360s, but not a higher ratio when you compare the number of units out there. In fact, the ratio of those sold to 360s was lower than their lead in units sold.
Kind of kills your argument, don't it?
Your link is from the Xbox site, by the way, and I have no doubt numbers are somehow figured to their advantage before publishing on that site.
Perhaps we should take into account the 20% or so 360s that get the "red ring of death", seeing as a large number of them are probably sitting around in boxes between the post office and Microsoft service.
By the way, a GT4 employee was quoted as saying that they felt constricted by the current 360 platform and its lack of a next-generation storage device (such as Blu-ray) to hold more information. Unless the 360 incorporates something like a Blu-ray drive, add-ons won't mean much. |
