I have two after school classes a week in my middle school. The class
has been quite a mix. Half of the students are on board and participate
well. The others seem hellbent on resisting the activities I plan. Some students have quit.

They said that they didn't like the fact that I make them stay after class
(3-5 minutes on average). This is done when they screw around and I enforcea few minutes of silence after class as a penalty.

I was just informed that my salary will be "reduced" because of the students that quit. No other details were given when I asked.

Needless to say, I'm not thrilled. Is this a common thing to do, reducing ot pay, in these after school classes?

Tell them that effective immediately you will no longer do the overtime classes if they're going to illegally withhold your salary. Let them know you will happily carry your complaint to the regional Office of Education, then to the provincial/metropolitan Office of Education, and finally to the Labor Board.

Your salary, or the pay you receive for the extra classes?

I prefer getting about 40,000 per hour flat for after school, then I don't worry about student numbers. If they don't want to have the class because of low numbers, I'll read a book.

First, thanks for the quick replies.

Well, the class is from 3:30pm to 5 and it is
called "afterschool conversation club". My contract
is 830 to 430, so I just assumed it was a class added
but still within the english program at the school. I was
told that there were these classes in my schedule and that
I would be compensated for them. I have the usual SMOE contract.

I start the class on school time, but my pay is reduced if student quits.
Sounds odd.

Loss of students will cut the profit margin. They can say the class is no longer profitable and no special class anymore. That's fine.

But the money meddler wants to retain his profit level by pulling it from your share. But you agreed to do the class at such and such pay rate.

I'd look at it this way; the class continues or it's cancelled. The pay stays the same.

Inform them that those classes will be "reduced"

?

You could look at some sort of pro-rata reduction.

Pay cut by 10% means a 50 minute lesson goes to 45 minutes. Simple.

I think you're being scammed. I believe the government provides plenty of money for schools to run after school programs and pay overtime. The principals, being the wonderful upstanding citizens, then tell the parents they need to pay X won to put little Bum Seok in the extra classes. They then tell the teacher that they are paying from money they collect from the students and because the students are so poor, they will have to pay less than the contracted OT payscale says. Then, the Principal and VP keep the difference. At least that's how it works at my school and that's the reason i have NEVER done any overtime there.

It's also possible that the school is already paying ALL the money collected from the parents to the teacher, thus, if a student drops, the teacher's salary drops with it. (Yes, this can and does happen at certain public schools.)

At mine every student paid 20,000 won for the extra class, goes into my salary. The next month a few dropped, couple added and so the rate went up to 30,000 a month for students to attend.

1) I would have told them such a penalty is illegal as spelled out in the LSA, then
2) I would have informed them my schedule just got several hours lighter... everything over contracted hours would no longer be taught.

The problem could also be that students don't pay until the end of the course. If they quit after a few weeks the teachers don't ask for the payment. They should pay in full in advance and if they quit, no refund! That would be more of an incentive for the parents to keep them going.

Also, how many hours are teaching during your normal schedule?
Your contract is what they should be sticking too. If your schedule is fairly quiet then they may subtract that from the after school. But you should be paid for any time after 4.30. Anyway check with SMOE and what your contract says.
