| It appears I'm paying employment insurance. It's only 10,000, and I'm happy to have it because I'm at an academy that just opened. Does anybody else pay this? Are we required to pay this? What are the details? How does it pay out? When would it pay out? Has anybody ever benefitted from this? |

I just had the same thing, I was told that it was law and had to pay it. Balls. I called the labour board and they said it was voluntary.
My argument was, the visa is tied to the job, if I lose my job I have to leave the country.
If they say it's because of workplace accidents the same argument applies (I think). You are only entitled to so much sick leave before you get the sack, perhaps upto a month. Check your contract, there's probably a clause that says if you miss too much work because of illness you get sacked.
Call 1350 and ask their opinion. Then tell the school to call 1350. Anyway, after 5  chats with the school rep, I was told I didn't have to pay it. |

It would pay out about 30 days AFTER you have to leave the country because you don't have a visa (since your job expired and your visa went with it).
As an E2 teacher you are EXEMPT from paying employment insurance. You CANNOT collect since your visa and sojourn are tied to your job. No job = no visa = no status to collect.
The ONLY deductions that should come from your salary are:
Income tax (about 1.7% and includes the residence tax)
NHIC medical (2.54% - matched by your employer)
National Pension (4.5% - matched by your employer).
IF you are on an "F" visa you are required to pay into it but you are also able to collect the benefits. |

I don't know anything. I'm just a newbie here.
Feel free to ignore my 20 won worth of free advice but don't say I didn't tell you.
OR... you could pop into the Seoul help center and get their 50 won worth of free advice and learn the same thing.
OR... you could pay into it for the next year.... and try to collect when you lose your job (but that might be tough since you won't have an ARC or visa to stay here - If you have your ARC or visa you must be employed and not therefore eligible to collect).
This is assuming you are on an E-visa of some kind.
If you have an "F" visa then it is different since your visa and status of sojourn are NOT tied to your employment.
But again... Feel free to ignore my 20 won worth of free advice, it's your money you are paying out... but don't say I didn't tell you.

Contact the labor board tel: 1350 extension 7. |

Extension 7 is English service so you can explain it to them and get the answers 1st hand...
then they can tell your boss the same thing in Korean so your boss doesn't turn around and tell you something different after the call. |

I know you're replying to Ttompatz' (always useful) advice, but I just couldn't help putting in my 2 cents: It is nothing to do with your recruiter. Call the labour board yourself and get the information first hand. They can explain it to you in English - if you press ext 7 then you get put through to an English speaker. Get it straight from the horse's mouth. |

| My recruiter stands by me in all things. He will call them and then explain to the director. It is much easier that way. |
