Edit - fairly recent thread here: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=121212&highlight=wii

Looking for the skinny on modded Wii at Yongsan, seems it would be a good thread to have.. how much / availability? plays copied games? plays genuine games from anywhere? plays fine on Korean / any TV? what are the dangers with firmware and bricking - only a problem if you go online? anything else?

I'm in the market for one, and now the price has gone down for the korean version im sure a lot of others are wondering whether to go modded or just buy an unmolested local one. Any news on the arrival of the modchip for the korean wii would be good too.

Modding an older Japanese or American or even European WII is 100% possible based on its serial number and chipset - It is the case these past few months that unmoddale WIIs have been surfacing (example - the Korean wii) - Currently there is no solution, anxious folk say that it will be a couple weeks (which I have been reading for a couple of weeks now) others suggest sometime in the summer.

EITHER WAY - The Korean WII is cheaper because it does not include WII sports... it is like a NES not coming with Mario - Kind of foolish.

So with a modded wii you can:
1. Play copied games from any region (may run into some video and software update problems with games not from the consoles region)
2. Install virtual console games (the stuff you usually have to pay for and download)
3. Play your normal games... no problem there.
4. Play original OR copied online - No problem there yet...

Newer WII games are starting to have detections built in to block WII modchips - There is no way of telling if information is being sent to NINTENDO via WIIconnect 24 (or whatever it is called)... Nintendo channels and games are always asking if you would like to send information about your playing habits - If you have a modified WII as a precaution I would advise selecting NO.

Bricking wellllll... Mod it and it may brick - I have had 3 Wiis in the past year (gave two away to family members) all were modded and I never had a problem. Also there are some pretty cool tools available to unbrick the system if need be (does not work for everyone). But if you read before you do anything and follow the communities about WII updates and new releases you should never have a problem... Hope this helps.

If you get a Modded WII and need an invite to a private tracker for games give me a shout I might be able to do you a solid.

Getting it modified is simple - GO TO YONGSAN - You can get it done either in the IPARK mall or in the underground market - Typically the stores in both of those places are connected in some way. If they ask over 80,000 it is too much.. 50,000 to 70,000 is a good deal. If your wii is newer and still moddable 80,000 is not to shocking. Also, if supply is low in both areas they will try and jack up the price so don't get offended if the guy says 120,000 - Just disagree and happily offer 70,000

You should have it done on the spot if you arrive at least an hour before close there is no reason you should have to wait a whole day. The process takes under 30 minutes and the wii is pretty simple to take apart.

And if you are going to buy a Japanese WII and some games there - Well I would expect to pay a hefty price - Supply and demand has got kinda crazy for the system.

ANYWAY GOOD LUCK!
