Just avoid EC like the plague. There are loads of threads on daves, use advanced search on google (search within eslcafe.com domain for english channel). On top of everything else, they wear blue coats. |

Yep...avoid...lab coats, unpaid training, unpaid leave....they sent me a run down the other day as I am looking for work in Korea...but there is NO way I am going to accept those conditions. It's sucky, because they kind of get you with the whole, "you won't have to prepare for classes", and the fact that you will be teaching adults...but seriously...NO PAID HOLIDAYS...not even Korean Public Holidays!!! You can find better. |

Don't listen to the "you won't have to prepare for classes" , balony. While that may be true for many locations, and will probably be the case after you get rolling, the manager at the location I was assigned to made me prepare at first.
She also made me come in 4 hours early the first day and asked me to come in Saturday and WORK unpaid as part of the the training process.
Then , after putting in a 12 hour first day, when the last student was a no-show, she had the audacity to insist that I stick around until after that cancelled class would have finished--even though we were looking at only 20 minutes more by the time we were sure the student was not coming.
You should have also seen the disappointment in her eyes when I said that I had already purchased my ticket to Japan for my visa run, as that is a profit center for the branches as they overcharge you for the cost of the airplane ticket.
Do a search with the term channel , and you will get a better response, as English is a common word and will mess up your search. |

Regicide: they make you pay for your own visa run? That is most certainly not standard practice... |

They would pay for the visa run only under certain circumstances. At that time, their policy was to pay W700,000 for airfare , when you finished the contract.
No training pay--not even lunch. |

Any place that forces you to wear a lab coat while teaching shouldn't even be considered. |

I know one guy who'd figured out the best (cheapest) flight for the visa run - he printed the details and handed it to the assistant manager. She ignored this and booked something far more expensive, which I believe he had to pay (not sure how this actually worked, deducted from his pay?). Anyway, he got increasingly angry about that and a host of other things, and did a runner after a few months. Since he ran, he never got the airfare back, so their tricks with visa run fares are just another way to milk a few more bucks out of disgruntled staff. Other common tricks for people who complete their contract are deductions from final pay, for things like lab coat washing and room cleaning. No, I kid you not. They claw back money by claiming they need to send polyester lab coats for dry cleaning. |

Definitely depends on the branch. I had no problems with them, but the head office follows the letter of the contract when it comes to compensation and I developed a very good relationship with my manager. And yes, the lab coat sucks, but, if you hate ironing, like I do, it's a kind of perk. |

Sometimes I feel bad about working for YBM Sisa, and then I read about English Channel. Yikes! |

What if your lab coat had ketchup and grease stains all over it? Would you be fired? |

If you ruined or lost your lab coat you'd have to pay for a new one. It's all in the contract. Stains and grease on coats were fairly common, never heard anything about that (it's a useful way of deducting money from final payment, after all) but I do know of guys being ordered to wear a tie and do up the top button of their shirt (this in the peak of summer).
In each "office" (sweat box) there is a coat stand and hanger. A directive came from head office someday stating that teachers were supposed to leave their coat neatly on the hanger at the end of their shift, id card clipped on the breast pocket. Everything was supposed to be aligned straight. A certain manager at a branch I will not name used to go around each office at the end of the day checking the alignment of the coats, so some of the teachers used to deliberately hang up them up a bit off kilter just to bug her. By the next morning they would always have been adjusted, perfectly straight on the hanger. It was a bit like prisoners of war playing tricks to annoy camp guards. Healthy working environment... |

Ditto here, the lab coat was the least of my concerns while working for E.C. |
