I have to get surgery for a hernia and will be in the hospital for 3 days. Doctor says this will cost me 1,300,000 won even though I'm a member of the National Health Insurance program. Does this sound right? I asked how much my insurance is paying and the communication problems started to grow thick. |

I just had a baby by C section, was in the hospital 5 days and our bill was 860,000. I would see if you could get some translation help. It seems awfully high! |

Did you go to an international clinic?
A hernia repair and hospital stay (with private room and western menu) at a regular hospital (even a university hospital) shouldn't run more than 500k. |

are you out of YOUR MIND, having surgery in korea would be like playing russian roulette. Well, I guess it is your life, and you are saving money, so why not, just take a chance, real smart. |

It's a Korean hospital. Nobody can speak English there. This is the website:

Maybe things are more expensive down in Busan than they are up here but I would certainly be looking for another hospital. That price is hiway robbery. |

That's a rip off, unless they are sewing you up with gold threads!
I had the same surgery and was able to haggle the price with the doctor after all was said and done. You should not have to pay over 800, 000 won out of pocket for everything I gander, depending on the type of room you stay in. |

All I know is that an appendectomy cost my friend with NHI W3,000,000 upfront before they would do anything at Sunchunhyang Hospital in Hannamdong several years ago. |

Interesting...because that's the very hospital I went to. No money down, 0% APR. Maybe I went when they were running a promotion? That would explain the dancing girls... |

THAT is called highway robbery. I didn't pay more than 1.2 for my appendectomy, including the 10 days spent in a private room (the total bill came to 3.5, though).
I had to pay money upfront, too, before they would do anything, but it was only 500,000. And actually, I wasn't the one who paid it, it was our uni's office manager. I was being carted out of the ambulance and was a little out of it to pay anything.
The time I had my vasectomy done at Sunchunhyang, it was cheap as hell with no money upfront. I'm surprised they pulled this stunt with you in a life threatening situation. |

Hm, that might have been the other girl with the burst ovary. I suppose that's more expensive? I'll check on how much the appendectomy was. I've been to SCH many times, actually. Never been fleeced, really. Pretty happy with them, although not entirely but that's a different story. |

My appendectomy here in Sosa Catholic University Hospital cost 1.3, and insurance meant i only paid 500 out of pocket. That was 5 years ago. |
