Has anyone asked immigration to extend their departure date by few days (after showing them a flight ticket out of here) recently??
I was actually under the impression that you used to have 15 days after your visa expires to leave, but I'm not sure if this is correct????
I'm just wondering whether they're still being as cooperative with the new legislation....
Any info would be much appreciated....
Cheers,

Not correct even a little bit.
There is NO LEEWAY at the end of your contract. You have to leave by midnight on the date listed on your ARC...unless you explicitly go an get it extended. |

It is easy to get the extension. You need your ARC, passport and exit ticket along with a signed application form.
It takes about 10 minutes after you get to the counter. There is no cost.
Now for the other matter.....

This is VERY INCORRECT.
THERE IS NO LEEWAY.
THERE IS NO GRACE PERIOD.
There never was a grace period or leeway at the end of your visa.
IF YOU ARE EVEN 5 MINUTES LATE GETTING THROUGH IMMIGRATION AFTER YOUR ARC EXPIRES you will be in an overstay position and subject to all that entails.
Get an extension if you are unable to leave before your ARC expires.

Thanks for the advice gentlemen. I would have sworn that the 15 days was correct - just goes to show how easy it is to get something in your head....

You must leave the country or extend the visa based on the expiration date on your ARC. I was in a similar situation some years ago when my contract expired 4 days after my ARC. I just went to the local immi office, explained that I wanted to honor the full contract for my PS, and I was immediately given a 7 day extension. Immi asked only to see my contract. They didn't ask to see a ticket, though. The sad part is that nobody at my school or POE office had any clue that this needed to be done.
Even funnier, on the second to last day of my contract, I got a call from my POE supervisor asking if I had completed my medical yet.... |

You were probably getting end-of-visa (no leeway) mixed up with mid-contract exit orders (15 days). |
