For the S.M.O.E. phone interview I know that they will ask for your ideas about lesson plans, class exercises, etc. I have no actual experience teaching a class. This is clear on my resume for anyone to see. Obviously some homework on my part is in order here, I realize. I will prepare for the interview using whatever I can find in texts or on the net, and try to be creative with it. But my question is, for S.M.O.E. candidates with no class experience, how versed in this do they expect you to be to be able to talk about it during a phone interview? They do take into account that you'll learn as you go, I assume? What do I need to watch out for during this interview with regard to the questions about lesson planning? Thanks. |

SMOE is now asking about teaching methods? They sure have changed since I interviewed with them.
OP, why not read up on the Internet or an EFL book? A few articles will give you good ideas.
One key, easy and proven method is the Engage, Study, Activate method.
Engage: This is a warm up where you have the students do an exercise, watch a video or answer questions. Don't say "We are going to study nouns relating to traveling today!" Instead, let the Engage activity introduce those nouns.
Study: This stage is where the students.......uh.....wait for it.....study! The teacher and students work through study exercises like repeating words, reading about usage, filling in blanks from word banks, etc.
Activate: Now the students can use the new vocabulary or lesson. Create something fun for them to do with the new skills, like role playing, creating art or poetry, playing a game using the vocab, etc. Possibilities are endless.
This method doesn't have to go 1: E 2: S 3: A It can go E S E S A A S E A etc, depending on the lesson you created.
In the interview, focus on making English useful and relevant to the students' lives and futures. Stress that it can and should be fun in the classroom.
If you have made it through the recruiters to SMOE itself, they want to hire you. They just need direct contact with you to make sure you aren't a screw up that tricked the recruiters. |

That's great, Bibbity. Thanks. I haven't heard of that three step method, but that first step had always been something I thought I'd do... Meaning, never start a class with the announcement of a mission or exercise or "work" of any kind, but use something, anything interesting, that grabs them, video, audio or whatever, that displays in some fashion the coming material... spoonful of sugar, etc. Then just work into it from that. I'm not surprised it is already considered a formula for teaching. I figured it would be. Seems like common sense. I'll read up. Thanks. |

Just got back from my interview with SMOE today. I came 1/2 hour early cuz I have a really long commute. I interviewed with someone other than Lois or Kelly. The interview lasted 30 mins. No teaching methodologies were asked. No questions regarding how to deal with culture shock. ( I anticipated these questions)
Questions tend to be really personally for me..such as where I was born. Questions related to teaching involve what I would do about discipline & what was the worst punishment I executed.
I didn't get a good feeling from the interview but it wasn't bad either. Ah well. I'll find out soon enough. |
