Was just wondering if anyone had any advice about the best (value for money) TViX system out there. I've seen some advertised on GMarket for as little as around 200,000, which I think come with 500gig hard drives, but I don't know if there's something terribly wrong with them compared to the more expensive ones.
I don't want to be spending much more than 300,000 unless the cheaper ones are completely useless.
Any ideas on ones to go for or ones to avoid? Thanks! |

Can you even buy that in Korea? I can't find it.
Note: The cheapest thing I could find to play h.264 was the TVIX 6?00 and it was about 350K w/o a drive! May as well build an HTPC. |

My point is, when it is "back in stock" will it be available in Korea? I haven't seen any mention of it on Korean sites. |

An HTPC is going to cost a hell of alot more than the TVIX you were looking at. I have the HD 4100-S. It plays h.264. The newer one has a couple more bells and whistles, but for all purposes mine plays everything the new one does...just no 1020p.
I paid 370k I think for my TVIX and a 500gig HD.
HTPC, you have to buy a lot of hardware, for a good one I'd expect it to run about 1mil won. Plus the TVIX is pretty small compared to a HTPC.
To the OP, don't always go for the cheapest thing out there. There is a reason the Popcorn is sold out, yet TVIX are available: Popcorn is sold in the US a lot more than TVIX is...I know in Canada it is pretty hard to even find a TVIX retailer. Here in Korea you can get them all over the place. |

No there is a waiting list.
You join, you wait for an invitation to buy and then you get one.
I know a couple of people with them and they are very happy. |

My PC cost me less than 700k a year ago and it can play 1080p, no problem. Core2duo @ 3.0Ghz, 8600gt, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD. This system would probably cost 400-500K now.
IMO Not worth it for the TVIX at 400K+ with HDD, when you can get an HTPC for a little more and it can do everything. Play games, surf, encode, etc, etc.
TVIX 6000 series (the only h.264 players I could find in Korea) are selling for well over 400K w/500GB drive on Gmarket:

nice little simple boxes but the price is ridiculous. |

TViX was once the forerunner for HD based media players, it could play most common formats out there. I have the cylinder type version which I got for around 200k. However it has been through more firmware upgrade than I can remember (my Cowon D2 is the other). My PC plays video much better though without the convenience of a remote control and a user friendly navigating system. It seems quite typical for Koreans to piece together circuit boards with a very rudimentary operating system and use us customers to monitor quality control.
This popcorn thing does look very interesting indeed, at least it plays MKV :

Where was it originally developed? |

^ either HK or Taiwan.
Not sure.
Friends who have it are running a 2.5HDD in it with no extra cooling in Thailand to make sure there is no noise from it. No complaints so far. |

That's impossible. They're probably in a well conditioned room. |

I also have the TVIX 4100SH and have absolutely no problems with it at all. Plays everything I can throw at it. I took the hard drive out and connect to all my media over the network so I could turn the fan off in the TVIX to cut the noise.
The new 6X00 series is out and is apparently more powerful....I'd look into one of those. |

No that is what they are doing.
It really riles me when some fuckwit comes out with a statement like that. Basically saying you are lying.
Why the *beep* would I want to lie about something like that.
We have had long chats over MSN about this Popcorn Hour and how to reduce and potential noise and heat from it. Which was decided on that running a 2.5HDD would do the job and reduce heat and fan noise.
So either accept that is what has happened or shut your fucking mouth. |

Ok that's fine, no need to get all rude on me.
a 2.5" still gets hot regardless. I own a couple, a TVIX and I used to live in Thailand.
I can't believe you can throw your weight around with that kind of language, where the hell do you actually come from idiot? |
