Does anyone know if it is possible to get a PS3 hacked/chipped/modded so it will paly different region DVD/Blu Ray movies? I'm wanting to get one since my US one fried, but I want to be able to watch my DVDs and Blu Ray movies on it as well. Is this possible?

Don't know how I fried it but I plug it in with an adapter and no picture or sound. My Xbox I bought here works just fine, so it's not my TV. But I get nothing with my PS3.

This is the correct thread, I don't want to know about a hack or mod to play downloaded games, just if there is a way to get a PS3 modded to be region free for movies.

So your 360 power supply worked with no problems? Did you just change the kettle plug on it? I thought the power packs were either 110 or 220. Didn't know they were multi voltage.

Should just be the same for the PS3 - get a Korean sized kettle plug and plug it in to the wall, no step-up transformer needed.

Might have been knocked about a bit on the way over here.

I'm thinking that it might have got bumped around on the way here. I got a kettle plug, even got a power converter to use the US power cord...all the lights are on, I can hear it spinning around, but no picture and no sound.

The Xbox I bought over here...I brought mine and totally fried it, plugging it in with just the kettle plug (not realizing that it was a different voltage) and I hear a pop and smelled smoke so I knew it was gone. But the one I bought here works just fine.

I don't mind buying another PS3, I just want to be able to watch my Region 1 DVD and Blu Rays on it

Did you have it on HDMI back home?

Start it up

THen hold down the power button to reset it but keep your finger on it to reset the video settings and put it back onto SD mode.

I bet it's just fine. As was said above...

The PS3 may be set to a different resolution than your TV can handle (and defaulting to the resolution setting of your USA TV -- maybe your Korean TV doesn't do that resolution that's set in its memory).

After it's already on, I believe holding your finger down on the power button for 5 seconds will get it to switch to the original default 480 standard definition mode, so you can reset the video to the proper definition you need.

Join www.bluray.com and ask for more help if needed.

Yeah, I had it hooked up via HDMI back home. I just tried resetting it, it worked but still no picture or sound. I just don't know what's wrong with it!

So you're using HDMI now? What is your TV brand and model? Did you try the RCA plug attachment? I have a component-out dongle for my PS3, which I use if I take it to work, and we could try this if the RCA plug dongle that came with your unit doesn't work.

No, I used HDMI back home in the States...over here I'm using the cables that came with it, I believe they are just RCA cables

There happens to be a PS3 service center about 2 blocks from my place here in Bangbae-dong, Seoul. My Playstation stopped spinning disks so I took it there. It took them 20 minutes to fix it and it was free since it was under warranty. I doubt the American warranty would be good here, but it would probably be cheaper than buying a new one.
As for DVD regions, there is no hack so far. With Bluray, however, America and Korea (as well as Japan) are all in region A so those should work fine if you do decide to buy a new one.

So my blu ray discs would work in either a US or Korean PS3, but regular DVD movies won't?
