| I hope you can get those, I have most in my first year- 2.1 million/month, good apartment, small class sizes, severance, airfare, medical/dental. My hours are more than you want, I work 40 hours a week, get 10 days of vacation + holidays, and overtime isn't optional (but I do get paid for it). Good luck!! |

I'm currently finishing my first year contract, and am looking for a job closer to Seoul. At the moment I'm in a hagwon working kindy/elementary for 30 hrs / wk. I've read some posts about the "first year wall" that you have to get over, and then the job situation opens up. Well I'm almost there, and I'm getting eager to see a "great job". What can I expect?
I'm hoping for a job with most (if not all) of these things in it:
(A) - decent wages (2.3 mil +)
(B)- short hrs (4-5 hrs / day; less than 30 hrs / wk)
(C)- decent apartment
(D)- good vacations (national holidays and 15 days +)
(E)- small class size (10-12 kids)
(F)_- severance
(G)- airfare
(H)- medical
(I_- optional overtime
Are these reasonable requests? Is there anything else that I should be looking for? This year has really worked me down and has really stressed me out. I've been "surviving Korea" and next year I'm really looking to "experience Korea". I want to make sure that I have a great time, not a work-myself-to-death time. Suggestions? |
I put letters on your requests for easy reference.
A. This is possible at either a hakwon or public school (P.S) (1 point apiece)
B. It's possible, though keep in mind that the standard at a hakwon used to be 30 hours but from the contracts I've seen they seem to be increasing towards the 40 hours per week. A P.S is usually 40 hours a week although (in GEPIK) you only teach a max of 22 classes over the week. (Let's give 1 point for the hakwon)
C. It's a crapshoot either way, but I'd lean towards a P.S on this one. (1 point for the P.S)
D. If you want more than 15 days a P.S. is more likely than a hakwon to give them. (Again 1 point for the P.S.)
E. Small classes. Here the typical hakwon tends to have the advantage (although rural P.S's can have classes that are just as small or smaller) (So 1 point for the hakwon)
F. Severance. Possible at both, but a P.S. is less likely to shaft you...it's not their money. (Let's be generous and give each a point)
G. See above.
H. A hakwon might skimp and try to get you on a private medical plan while a P.S will register you with the National one (1 point for the P.S. on this one) P.S's are also much more likely to pay pension and proper tax (which gives them another point)
I. Overtime can be had at both...at a hakwon it's less likely to be optional though.
If you have been tallying the points, the P.S comes out ahead.
A good P.S will provide all of those except the short working hours and the class sizes (if you're in an urban area). A good hakwon..Unlikely on less than 30 hours (though shorter than P.S) and unlikely on the 15+ days vacation (they lose money if you're not there). There are exceptions but they tend to be rather few. |

| Urban, pretty fair analysis, I would just like to add that regarding pay, the OP is more likely to get 2.3+ at a hagwon. He wants to be closer to Seoul which will most likely cost him any possible rural allowance. It would also be his first year at a PS, so negotiation would be difficult, especially closer to Seoul. I'd give the point to the Hagwon on this one. |

In August, I got a lot of good offers to work in Seoul. Then, I saw one offer in the country, so I went with it. I am now in Seoul at a different school, and this time around I got offered one decent job (2.2 or 2.3) and when I asked about an interview the recruiters would tell me the job was taken and then offer me a 2.1 job with a lot less in the offer. Many times, the location was further out from Seoul than the first job (which made me wonder if the first offer really existed). So, I think it was a bad time of the year. They were trying to get me to work at a "leftover" school from new school year in March that no one else was taking.
I suggest you wait it out if need be (of course, look, but I got tired of waiting and was lucky enough to get an offer directly through a school), until August when better schools might be looking for teachers. You'll have a better selection in my opinion. I didn't get the exact location I wanted, but it's worked out fine. By the way, it's a hagwon, and I never got one decent offer from a public school. |

Go to a public school. I just started my second contract and told them I would stay if they gave me more OT. So now I'm at 2.8m/month for 22 (teaching) hours/week.
I know there are many on this board who make much more, but for the amount of free time and vacation I have, I think I've found my ideal job! |
