I was reading the US Travel Warnings & Consular Information Sheets
http://usembassy.state.gov/seoul/wwwh3550.html and found something about severance pay in South Korea. It says "By Korean law, discussed below, all full-time employees, Korean or foreign, are entitled to receive severance pay of one month's salary for each year of employment. Employers cannot ask you to waive this, nor can they get around it by employing you on an 11-month contract. However, Korean courts have ruled that unless a Hakwon instructor actually TEACHES 40 or more hours per week, as spelled out contractually, he is NOT 'full-time' and is NOT eligible for severance pay."

In the contract I've been offered it does say that upon completion of the 12 month contract a months pay is given.

What your experiences with this? Do most people get the severace pay or just assume that you'd be lucky if you did?

Thanks

It may be the case that schools must offer 12 month contracts but can terminate you at 11, in which case you are SOL,

Happened to me just yesterday.

If you're not planning on staying in Korea and you're afraid you might not get your severance pay, try telling your boss you want to stay on another year. If he thinks you are staying, he's more likely (of course not 100% so) not to fire you after 11 months and he will give you the bonus and return airfare equivalent. If he doesn't give it to you on time, you have a new e2 visa and time to pressure him and fight for it if needed. Not a full proof plan, but might give you a new idea to go on. Good luck.
