First, I went into Daegu for my green card today. I gave over my medical report and ... MY PASSPORT? Again?! What do they want that for? I've been in-country for two weeks. If they were doing an additional CRC, why wait until I've been around younglings for two weeks? Why give me three months to do this? If it's not for a CRC, what do they want to hang onto my passport for? I hate letting go of that thing.
Second, someone came into my apartment today to spray something around. It was in a standard chemical sprayer, but there was no label, and I couldn't get anyone to tell me the name of the chemical. Does anyone know what that is?
And what is "Ne!" or "Ne?" or "Ne....." or ... is that analogous to anything American?
Cheers. |

Ahh, cheers. Was probably parathion or some such. Hang on, let me light another cigarette...
And "Ne" sounds like a "Yep." When used informally. "Thank you!" "Yep!"
Cheers again. |

English conversation, the person listening will usually say,
"......mmm hmmm........I see...........ya...............<nod head>............mm hmmm......... ok........." These are verbal and nonverbal prompts used to let the speaker know you are still listening.
In Korea they just say ".....ne.......ne........ne ne..........ne....."
Also, they ask for your passport cuz you probably don't have your Alien Resident Card yet and they need to see some identification. As an American, you should be USED to having to show your ID all over the place.
Don't be so paranoid with your passport. If its a hospital, your school, a government agency, or some other legitimate institution then I would say its safe to have them take a look at your passport.
By the way, when you wire money home, the Bank will ask you for a passport, so don't get your panties in a bunch if they ask for it. |

Sorry, I meant that they actually *took* it, they didn't just want to *see* it. They will be holding it for 10-14 days while they do.........what? |

When you said "green card" are you talking about your ARC - I think so because you talk about giving them your medical report and needing to give the passport as well .... Immigration need the passport so they can put a stamp in it when they issue the ARC ... and I guess as a final check that everything is in order ... That is normal practice ... You will get it back when you get the ARC .... The dates on your visa and in particular the date you entered the country (which is stamped in your passport on the visa page) are included on your ARC ...
The people who have said you will have requests for your passport in all sorts of situations to apply for things / transfer money / as ID ... Just accept that you are in another country and sometimes you will have to use it ... But after the ARC I don't know of any reason why anyone would need to hold it for any period of time ... Usually they will just want to see it and maybe copy it depending on the situation ...

OH! Thanks. Yeah, I haven't had a need to show my passport to anyone as of yet. Yeah, that makes perfect sense, thanks. |

The spray renders you sterile until you pass out of the country again at which time your passport will be sprayed with the antidote which renders you virile again. Fire away! |

My apartment is on the 13th floor and they don't know what "skeet skeet" means here, so.. I guess I'm a step ahead of you. |
