Does anybody have any info on teaching in the Phillipines?
I have a copy of an otherwise excellent book "Teaching english Abroad", but it fails to mention this particular part of asia.
Are English teachers required? Conditions and Pay?
I've given notice to boss here in Korea and just want to get out.
If no info on the Phillipines then I'll try Vietnam. Sounds like the current "growth" area..... |

The Philippines consider English to be one of their official languagea. It's not a 2nd language but it's integrated into the language.
If you hold a Masters or Phd inEnglish/Linguistics then there could be a chance for you to teach in a prominent school or university.
Also there are a lot of language schools in the Philippines BUT you won't be teaching Filipinos but Koreans/ Chinese/ Japanese/ Taiwanesef etc..if you're determined to educate the less literate Filipinos then you can go to the smaller islands and less developed areas of the country and try your luck there. |

Ok, thanks for that. Thats kind of the info I needed. Sounds like Vietnam could be a goer then............
What is the Phillipines like as a tourist destination? I've heard it is a popular korean honeymooner place but it doesn't appear to be a westerner favourite..... |

Philippines is great for westerners and Koreans. I like it a lot anyhow. They speak English there as well..
Actually, you can click on my own website in the 'www' button of my profile. You can read about my times in both Philippines and Vietnam.
Shortly though, Vietnam they have a demand for English teachers. The cities aren't all that huge though.. I mean comparitively to Korea/Japan/China.. and there are a lot of travelers going through picking up work. Its a good spot nontheless.. but not as huge a destination as northeast Asia or as plentiful of jobs.
Philippines there are a few schools I've come across but extremely rare and they pay very poorly. If you teach there it would once again be Koreans most likely.. and you'd get paid about 1/3 the salary.. (about 600,000 won fulltime)..
Both are great places for traveling though. |

You won't make much money but I have also come across some schools in Manila/Cebu.
Vietnam sounds good but I hear that Hanoi is the place to go instead of Ho Chi Minh - $1,000 - $1,500 U.S. per month is what I've read here on Dave's and what people have actually told me.
I'd definitely look at Vietnam.
Also, is English an "official" langauge in Philippines and India ??
I see people write this a lot but have been told that ENGLISH is NOT in fact an official language in either country - ? |

I went to the Philippines. The night life was a lot of fun. What I can't deal with is people begging you for money every three feet that you walk. They'll run over and open your taxi door for you and expect a tip. If they get used to your face, though, you may not be bothered after awhile. |

I agree.
Out in the Provinces, the people are really polite and friendly.
But - how does that saying go ... I wouldn't trust my Mother if I met her in Manila
lol !
I can't recommend Palawan enough (El Nido) - A true paradise!

If you're thinking of a vacation in Vietnam give me a call via PM or e-mail. I'd love to go too, but nobody wants to go with me.
I'm still thinking of the P's as well ... Boracay specifically ... |

There is another thread currently running on Vietnam began by Lawyertood. He's going to Vietnam sometime over Winter vacation. I think a few others might as well. |
