One of my students has started doing a phone teaching programme with some American company. She was complaining to me that her phone teacher always sounds unhappy. She had previously done some phone teaching with a Fillipino who did sound happy. She explained to me 'Pilippine teachah happy, Canadian teachah (me, I guess) happy, but American teachah very unhappy'.

'Oh' I asked, 'What time do you talk to her'?

'7PM'.

'Um, you do know that when it's 7pm here it's 2-5am in America, don't you'?

Suddenly a light-bulb went on. Yeah, no wonder she doesn't sound happy.

Can you imagine if your job was to stay up all night talking to EFL students around the world? Anytime we think we have it bad off we should remember that at least we get to *see* our students. I also wonder what, if any, experience or qualifications this American teacher has if she's doing that kind of job at those hours.

Hmmm, can you imagine if you had to stay up all night flipping burgers, cleaning toilets in a coffee shop, or watching cameras for a factory that no one will ever break into?

You get to work at home with privacy, and also work your own hours. If you do want to work during the day you can do that also, which might be teh same wages some others make at their current jobs.

I prefer seeing the students, but I would also like to see a whole let less of them, if you know what I mean. (If you don't - one on one teaching? Yes. Please!)

Also working nights rules. I've done it twice and both times - it ruled. Any job is better if you're doing it at night.
