Hey everyone I am looking into getting one of the two and was wondering what the pros and cons are of one vs the other.

Are DIVX players basically the same thing except with the capability to play any movies on it through a TV without a computer? How does this work?

Anyone know the rough prices I could expect for either one? I'm not looking for anything super huge but what size/stats offer the best value.

thanks for any help/direction,

Ryan

Yes, they're like a hard drive with that capability built into the box that encloses the hard drive. The ones I've seen use basic old-style RCA video and audio outs for playback through a TV.

Put simply :

Portable hard drives - comes in 2 sizes, 2.5 and 3.5". The smaller one obviously offers less disk space than a 3.5" drive but it does not need a power adapter, only a USB cable to power it up. Everything else needs a power adapter. These need a computer and software to play videos.

DIVX Players - Are the same as portable hard drives except you connect them to a TV to play video. You will still need a computer to copy files into the player's hard drive for it to work. These are available in both 2.5 and 3.5".

Personally if you just want something to play popular videos from the net then a 2.5" DIVX player will do the job just fine. Its very portable and easy to set up.

Here are some examples :

Then you can get the 3.5" version which you can put in larger hard drives (1 TB) or feed off a network. They get more complex because some offers wireless or playback impossibly high quality videos like this one :

or this one :

I have a TVIX model which has been bested by the 6500, apart from being able to play the highest quality videos there isn't anything else of an improvement.

There are lots more that I can't even keep count of. Here's a site with a couple of useful reviews :

And they all share one thing in common, very rudimentary user interfaces resembling something out of an Atari system.
