Maybe its because I've just finished another painful home-vist lesson for a group of 10 year olds.

But does anybody else sometimes feel that we english teachers are on the same social heirachy as prostitutes. Are we really "working in the esteemed field of education" or are we just selling our souls and bodies for a quick buck.
Is the loss of dignity we're forced to under-go worth the money?
The kids in question (the home visit) are all doctors kids. The spawn of the leading surgeons in Jinju. The parents are always nice and friendly but there is a feeling of "being the pet wagookin".
The oldest boy never gets over his fascination for my arm hairs. EVERY lesson he wants to look at them with a magnifying glass. "For science!" he claims.......
But even the housemaid seems condendsending. Maybe I'm getting paranoid (I said that in my last post...) but its just this feeling.......
ANd the whole hagwon thing. Initially I accepted the idea of being the trained monkey...... but after a while don't you just feel like going home and having a long shower. And still feel unclean when you get out.....
We're not getting paid because of our "expertise" in the english language.
We get given money so the koreans can claim... "Oh looky- we have our very own pet foreigner. Isn't it so velly velly funny".
Give a prostitute money and she'll willingly forego her self respect and dignity. She sells herself for cash. (Well so I've been told........ Of course I wouldn't know...............)
Aren't we doing the same thing?

Its been a bad day.

Respect and dignity are things I get from my friends and loved ones, not my workplace. As it happens, I do enjoy hagwon work, even if I am just seen as a trained monkey. Who cares as long as the money goes into my bank account?

How are you "selling your soul"? Are you being forced to do things at work that you believe are unethical? If not, then your worst complaint seems to be that some kid is fascinated by your arm hairs. Cry me a river. If you think the work that you describe here is degrading, I'd say you've lived a very sheltered life indeed.

At least you've no pimp to give 90% of your earnings.

Pimped myself out for some 6 years here, and well.....my house, car and Harley will be PAID IN FULL.

Shoosh,

Ryst

Oh, and if you've got the right kids and parents, it won't be NEARLY as bad as you make it out to be. My kids work hard, respectful, and parents pay right nice. Then it won't feel like whoring at all...

I bet I could make some serious money becoming an "English Prostitute". Adjumas seem to love to flirt with me.

Actually, been propositioned....one night, 500,000 won....and she was almost milf.

Woke up to worse, for sure.

And, to the best of my knowledge, male prostitution is not illegal...that is, nothing enforceable.

Shoosh,

Ryst

So did you take it or what?

Doubt anyone would pay me 500,000 to screw em, but I'd think any single guy would be nuts to turn that offer down. The chick would have to be Rosanne Barr fugly for me to to run from it. (Well when I was single...)

Loss of dignity? What are you talking about? Do you not have classroom control over your students? It's in all how you present yourself. Are you prepared? Do you make your lessons informative as well as entertaining? Do you dress well (I found this to be important in Korea)? Do you enforce discipline in the class? Personally I wouldn't work for anyone that wouldn't let me have full control over my lessons. But this requires real teaching. If you are just here to make a quick buck, well then as long as you are paid on time and in full, I don't know what you are complaining about.
To be respected takes effort. Too many people on this board just go through the motions and then complain "I can't get no respect!" What do they expect? I wouldn't respect a 'teacher' who played Hangman and Bingo all day either. This is not a personal attack on you Penguin BTW, maybe just something to consider?
