hi forum experts,

if anyone can please advise...

if a public holiday falls on a weekend does monday automatically become a public holiday or do hogwan teachers get a day in lieu (a day they can take off at a later date which will count towards public holidays , and not against the 10days of vacation)?

thanks for any answers

In Korea, no-one LEGALLY gets a day in lieu (as in there is NO provision for this in the labor standards acts). The only exception would be one done by presidential decree and I don't see that happening any time soon.

If they fall on a weekend, oh well, such is life.

It will really suck to work here in 2009 (the majority of national holidays (red days) fall on a weekend).

It is only the rich people and foreigners who get weekends off already. Saturday is just another workday for most (including real school teachers and ALL students).

Most people here still work 6 days a week (and some work 7) so they get and enjoy the day off - even if it is on the weekend. You are only LEGALLY entitled to 1 day off per month (under the labor standards act).

If you don't like it.... marry a Korean, live on your F2 for a couple years, switch to an F5 and then lobby for change OR... just stay on your side of the planet where things fit your sense of how things should be.

This ain't Kansas here Toto... Life really is different when you get off the airplane and they have a different rule book to play by. Get with the program or it WILL bite you in the ass.

.

Oh, and feel free to ignore my advice.... I'm just a newbie here too...

It is ironic, though, that the number of "red days" was reduced because Korea had (putatively) adopted the five-day work week, so fewer holidays were supposedly necessary.

Well my boyfriend sure as heck isn't rich, but he only works one Saturday every six weeks or so.

As for the every other Saturday half day plan that schools (in Gyeonggi-do at least) are on, isn't that supposed to change soon?

I lost many paid holidays last year due to them falling on the weekend and Korea does not push them ahead or back to a Friday or Monday to make long weekends like common on the American calendar. There were only 2 long weekends; Lunar New Year 3 day and Chuseok was a long 5 day holiday though it usually is only 2 or 3 days on a given year.

Never did a holiday fall on Monday or Friday to allow a long weekend. In fact, many fell on Saturday to make a long 2 day weekend as Sunday is considered a red day or a once a week holiday with Saturday being considered the last work day of week. Korea has a 6 day work week with many working 7 days a week and you are privileged if you're working only 5 days a week despite the calendar not offering breaks like you get in western countries.

I haven't worked five straight in 5 weeks, and the next two weeks area also 4 days. It's freaky how many holidays Korea has. And then the special ones like today. My schools birthday. No classes.

ttompatz is correct. Going on eight years here and that's how they've always done it. If a holiday falls on a weekend...then that's just how it is and it is NOT pushed forwards or another day given in lieu.

Yep, next year is sure going to bite. Laughing

My school's birthday was on a Tuesday but they bumped it to Saturday instead. Evil or Very Mad So they can bump, but they pick really awful times to do it!

have always appreciated the spot on advice you so freely give to me and many others.

the frustration was at loosing days off...certainly not the accuracy of your advice....apologies again for the misunderstanding

But your school's birthday is NOT a national holiday and there is no provision in law for days off in lieu.
