So it seems couple jobs in public schools are mainly non-existant. This means we are now considering hagwons, which have you work most of the daylight hours and then your freetime=nightlife. Right? Well we were going to work in Changwon, but everyone admits there's not much of a nightlife there. So what would we do until the weekend? Now we're going back to considering Busan. We're used to being in a small town, and though we're willing to adapt, it would be a stretch to jump into Seoul I think. Where should we go?
Air quality and having something to do are our main concerns.
God help us, this never seems to end.

The air quality is not too bad in Busan, not compared to here in Thailand anyway. Air quality is often worse in areas that are close to big cities where the pollutants mix together to form an invisible, hazardous cocktail that then drifts to nearby suburbs - like Changwon!
Most of the pollution in London comes from Holland!
Get a job in Busan and stop fretting over stupid crap. |

Wrong, Many Hagwons work the afternoon/evening shift so your working hours would usually fall into the 2/3pm till about 9/10pm slot. I'm not much of a morning person so I'd wake up late, go into work...and then try go out a bit afterwards, so nightlife was important to me, but if you are the type that wakes up at 8am everyday, with a 9/10pm you won't be that keen to regularly go out after work, and most of your free time will be mornings, early afternoon. |

as the other poster noted. you have it backward on hogwans. They start afternoons and stretch into nights. (e.g. 3pm to 10-11 pm)
since those schools are private and don't teach a standard curriculum, they can't interfere with the "normal" public schools which hold classes during the day.
unfortunately your priorities are in somewhat of a conflict, especially in Korea. Preferring a small (er) town environment and clean air and "something to do/nightlife" are somewhat incompatible (depending on what you think of when you say "something to do". |

Kristina - you are making problems where there aren't any! Changwon is hardly 'small town' it is a pretty big place compared to the towns in the UK and the states.
What city is there on the planet where there is a lack of air pollution? Rekyjavik! 
Have you contacted kimnjoe like it has been suggested? They are good for jobs on the ground in Changwon!
Changwon is a nice place that has everything you need though you will never know if it is the right place until you get there! Thats the gamble we all took! |

Thanks to all of you. I guess I mis-stated on my first post... I know that hagwons are for after/before school. I just don't think that I will want to get up in the morning and have my day and THEN teach.
And thanks matman, for your honesty. This may be stupid crap, but I'm going to be stuck for a year wherever I go, so I think even the stupid crap matters. I'm sorry if my constant posts annoy anyone. |

Are the two of you afraid to teach at separate schools? Changwon's small enough that even if you both lived in separate apartments you could travel between the two with ease. I don't think it would be any great inconvenience. Apartments in Korea are tiny and having your own space might be nice. I dunno, I'm just getting the feeling you might have a hard time over there if you absolutely must have your boyfriend by your side all day long to help you fend off those scary kids.
As far as night life: what's that? Dancing until 4AM to DJ Q*Bert? There's enough of that in Changwon, if that's your thing, and plenty of other things to do. Having said that, there isn't much to do in Korea, Seoul or otherwise.
As many have said before: Seoul is metropolitan but not cosmopolitan (and that's true of every other city in Korea). Korea is just not hip, not cool; it lacks quirkiness, edge and originality. Most of the clubs play really bad Korean rap and boy band music. Horrendous stuff. The beer is watered-down swill. All the dudes rock these Final Fantasy mullet haircuts and the girls all dress like whores from the Little House on the Prairie set (actually, that sounds kind of hot now that I think about it).
I'm not saying you can't have a good time and enjoy yourself in Korea I'm just saying anyone who talks about how Seoul nightlife "is the bomb, yo!" is probably a douchebag with zero taste. |

I love my working hours at a hagwon. It means that I work from 2-9 and then stay up really late and sleep late and still have time left to do errands (going to the bank, grocery shopping, etc.). It's like having two days instead of one. Changwon is a good city. It does have less air pollution than Busan or Seoul. It is the only "planned city" in Korea. There's also a great church there if you are into that.
Ulsan has a better church. Lots of activities, trips to Costco, retreats, trips to orphanages, etc. I love my church in Ulsan. Plus, if you need medical help, the church will help you, and there's a doctor who's a member of the Korean side of the church who will see you for free. |
