Considering going to the Philippines by way of Manila in May. I've heard stories about muggings, and while I'm not naiive or an easily scammed newb traveler, I'd like to be educated. Is it safe? I'm a female traveling alone.

And how's the in-country travel? Cheap? Rail? Bus?

How does it compare to Thailand, price-wise?

Any suggestions on where to go or what to do (I'm more of a beach reader/natural/cultural appreciator than a partier.) are welcome, too.

I am in the same position. I am traveling by myself to the Philippines next week by way of Manila. My final destination is Boracay. I have heard stories about Manila that are not the most flattering, but if you are not a complete moron chances are you should be fine.

I don't know about your experience traveling by yourself but I have done it often - there are no garauntees, but keeping your wits about you (regardless if you are a man or woman traveling with people or solo) is the best advice you will be given.

As far as which area of the Philippines will suit you best - do a search. ttompatz has already graciously explained, in detail, a variety of areas in the country many times.

I traveled from Korea to the Phillippines solo this past winter. I arrived around midnight in Manila and stayed in the airport, with tons of others, to catch the first flight to out to Palawan.

I roamed solo for 10 days and stayed in 4 different places. I took several long bus trips, some taxis and motorcycles. I felt safe always on Palawan. Out on Palawan life was more slow and simple but back in Manila, where I spent three days shopping and dancing, I'd say be a little more guarded, as it's a fast-moving city and sure you could find yourself in uncomfortable situations.

Ok I'll stop here but pm me for particulars about Palawan or Manila if you need.

I'd be wary in Manila.... The first time I was there, I saw on a dign when entering a mall "Please check youe guns and deadly weapons." That was in Makati.. the posh, business area (which would be a good place to stay).

The touristy places should be fine (like Boracay)... but when I was in the Provinces, I felt like a target.. I was the ONLY foreigner I saw... and those "provinces" don't look like any in Canada.. they were dingy looking with mostly dirt roads....

Philipinos are really friendly, but it's still freaky the first few times... especially at night and around the airport (there is a huge slum surrounding the airport)..

I'd take one or the taxis offered for 500 pesos ($10), even though it's 10 times the price of a regular one... it's much easier.. gets you out of the airport fast and avoids scams....
