Wife and I are doing 3 days in Tokyo and 3 days in Kyoto...Which neighborhoods or areas of the cities would be the best to stay in ?...We want to be in the center of the action and see and do allot of stuff by walking from our hotel...Budget isn't a huge issue...I don't want to spend $400 a night but I expect that it will be expensive by my midwestern US standards...We want to stay at a proper hotel.

Any ideas would be great...The travel book we have is pretty weak in this area.

Kyoto is awesome!! The Toji-ann guesthouse is alright. Bit of a dorm-style, but the price isn'y yoo shabby.

One suggestion~ check out Nara as well. I hear it's great! Have an awesome trip.

I stayed in a chisun solare hotel in Hamamastucho. Here is the website: http://www.solarehotels.com/english. It costs about $140 a night for double occupancy. The hotel was very nice and includes a very good all-you-can breakfast each morning.

It was very close to the action, about a twenty minute walk from Ginza, and it's on the JR Yamamoto line. This line is a circle that hits every major place you'll probably want to see in Tokyo, such as Shibuya, Harajuku, Shinjuku, Ueno Park, Yebusa, Ginza. The only place off this line you'll want to check out is Asakusa. This is reached by the second line in Hamamastucho that is about a five minute walk from the JR line. It's also only about 200 Yen from Hamamastucho to any of these places on this line. NO TRANSFERS.

Finally, the hotel is about a 15 minute walk from Sheba park, Zojoji temple and Tokyo Tower.

Cheers,
Ryan

K's House Kyoto. It was the best hostel I have ever seen. Brand new and has a full kitchen and a great location. I would recomend to everyone.

They also have a Tokyo location that I have heard is just as good.

Good luck!

I've stayed at the Toji-ann guesthouse before. It's kind of dirty and scummy, IMO. I don't mind it when I'm travelling alone, as it's very cheap, but no way in hell would I ever bring my wife there. Who wants to stay with their wife in a scummy, "dorm-style" youth hostel? That place is NOT a proper hotel.

I don't know of any specific hotels in Kyoto, because I have a friend that I can stay with when I'm there... and I live in Tokyo, so no need for a hotel there. But, if you can, look up "ryokan". That's a traditional Japanese Inn. They can be a bit expensive if it has an onsen (less than US$100 if it hasn't one), but try to stay at least one night in one.

You can get a room in a "business" hotel in Japanese cities for $50-75/night, which isn't too bad. It's not a large room, but it'll have a single bed and all facilities. How close are you and your wife? Wink They will usually offer larger rooms if needed. Just do a search. Find a lonely planet in a book store and copy the website addresses of hotels from it.

In Kyoto, anywhere close to Kyoto Station is good, because of train and bus connections, anywhere downtown (Gion area) is amazing, and anywhere close to Higashiyama (east mountain) is amazing. Most of the sites in Kyoto are there. Kyoto isn't a huge city, so you'll be fine at any of these areas.

Tokyo, on the other hand, is huge... kind of like Seoul, but moreso. A hotel near a station on the Yamanote line would be idea, especially around Tokyo/Yurakucho/Hibiya stations, Ebisu (easy acess to Roppongi if you like going out at night), Shibuya or Ueno are where you should be looking. Asakusa and Akasaka are also good. The area RyanInKorea suggested would be ideal! Strongly consider his suggestion.

Since you'll be in Kyoto and Tokyo for 6 days, consider spending some time shopping or hanging out in Odaiba in Tokyo. You'll probably have had your fill of temples and old buildings, so Odaiba, with it's futuristic buildings, expos and boardwalk area, might be a nice change of scenery.
