for my good friend, not me. So, his budget is between 1 mil. and 1.5 mil. (preferably around 1 mil). This is what I have thus far:

Core 2 Quad Q6600
Geforce 8800GT
2 gigs ddr2 (i can't remember, but, I think it is 8400)
asus board
zalman fan
600 watt power supply
case....etc.
Total cost - about 900,000

Thoughts? I'm looking to run Crysis on high. This rig surpasses my current one and my current one should be able to handle Crysis on high. Should I get a better graphics card? From the reviews I have read, the 8800GT seems to be the best bang for one's buck. I wouldn't touch the 9 series yet because it's just a rehash of the 8 series (i.e. same technology).

You don't think so? I'm downloading the demo now to test it on my 7900GTX. I'll see what kind of fps i can get. The 8800GT should be stronger and should therefore yield better results. Shoot, how different is crysis from oblivion? Is it drastically different? On my 7900GTX, I can run oblivion maxed out with no problem.

The 8800Ultra has a hard time with it... Crysis make current gen hardware cry. Oblivion and Crysis are way different. The 8800 is EOL almost so I would wait for new gen Vid card to come out which launch between June18-24 ATI and Nvidia.

Um, I just bought a computer with specs relatively the same as his and I have absolutely no problem running Crysis on high with the 8800GT. Runs like a dream, no slow down whatsoever.

Maybe you mean Very High, but I don't have Vista.

Crysis requires a lot more than Oblivion. I'm running both games now with my OC'ed HD3870. I can max every setting on Oblivion and never see less than 50fps. Crysis? I can just about get a steady 40fps with most things on high and some settings on medium.

But remember with Crysis you can unlock the Very High settings when played on a Vista machine with a DX10 card. These Very High settings are basically what brings every card out there to it's knees. Only multi-GPU machines have a chance of playable Crysis with everything maxed. No single-card solution out there today can really handle Crysis satisfactorily.

Forget about the 8800GT......or any other card out there today. They're all at the end of their production run.

As said before, there's a new generation coming out this summer from both nVidia and ATI. Nvidia will be producing a huge monster which will probably blow everything else away but is projected to cost at least 500usd. ATI are soon to release the 4870 which will cost a lot less than the new nvidia cards but is considered to be a really fast design.

You can run Crysis on high settings if you use a lower resolution. Most review sites I see run on resolutions like 1680x1050 or higher. Some include 1280x1024. Check out those reviews.

As for the set-up, is this the same guy that wrote the thread "Computer!"?

If you are gonna buy a 8800 series card, see if the G92 gts is available... more shaders ftw with Crysis.

You can unlock very high with dx9 with xp.. No difference between Vista or XP.

As people telling me high with no problem (on a 8800) I have a hard time believing..

What resolution?

Splif.. Where to start hmm.. I just hate zalman crap to many bad experiences. I felt like picking on you.. I honestly prefer OCZ, ULTRA, EnermaX, Fortron.

well...i currently have an 800watt (IIRC) ultra psu in my baby and it runs wonderfully. Almost a year now and no problems. I like to stick to what works rather than venture into the unknown...So, I can speak for ULTRA. They make wonderful PSUs.
